“Like with the Quebecois, the issue is not a simple cut or a clear one.

Every one favors independence in the abstract. Making it work - a lot of issues have to be resolved for that to happen.

Its not like you can check “yes” on the ballot and expect roses and champagne in the morning.”

I fail to see how that is any different then continued dependence upon the will of distant majorities?

Everyone also favors Union in the abstract, the trouble is making it work over the long run where its not abusive to any member. Even our own framers failed to do that despite their best effort. The truth is however few if any large country’s have ever tried and i don’t know of any in the modern sense that have succeeded over the long run. I suppose the problem is with the nature of politicians and politics being driven for power and advantage tends to make it difficult to maintain balance. Particularly when that power is bought thou uses of the public Treasury and law.

In the case of Scotland this is only going to become more obverse as the few benefits of union with England become less significant while they are replaced by union with NATO and the EU.

In today’s world being a strong military power simply means your politicians get to expend your money and lives solving the world’s problems, while most of the ‘weak’ world gets a free ride.

In today’s world even economic security of free trade is being granted transitionally with remarkable stability thou various organizations to the point where even that benefit of union is all but lost.

So what is any part of a large country left with when theses key benefits are replaced with anther institution or union? its quite simple the obscene costs.

Scotland may have lost its independence vote today, but they didn’t lose the cause, frankly given the environment its only a matter of time before they vote again and win that vote. There is no advantage to either Scotland or England in remaining 1 united kingdom under the EU, merely expenses.

Yup.

The Scottish nationalists are social democrats.

If they want a Sweden on the North Sea, that’s their prerogative.

It’ll depend on how they’ll draft the new constitution, if the outcome is ‘yes’. If they go republic, then definitely she won’t be. Though so far some nationalists have said they’ll keep the present queen, but can’t guarantee long-term future of monarchy in Scotland. Why do you think they won’t keep her?

Quebec sovereigntists and Scottish nationalists are both leftists.

Indepedence is very much a progressive cause.

Close.

You’d expect the vote for independence to be overwhelming.

Don’t people want freedom? But that’s a rare thing in the history of mankind.

“Quebec sovereigntists and Scottish nationalists are both leftists.

I wouldn’t say that at all, unity is the key to all leftist causes. While the demographics of the left tends to favor a stupid base with locally short sighted leaders.

Apparently, being cut off from the English gravy train is having an effect on Scottish voters’ judgment.

Independence is not as attractive when you have to begin pulling the wagon yourself.
