President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, architects of a foreign policy which envisages Sunni Muslim Turkey as a regional power, are reluctant to engage in action they fear could strengthen their enemy, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and exacerbate sectarian tensions in Iraq.
"It's a very complicated balancing act. Turkey is trying to satisfy its U.S. partner without extending full collaboration...."

It's cold blooded realpolitik.
We should threaten to close our air base at Incirlik , get Turkey kicked out of NATO and get all EU ties severed .
double dealing Turkish bastards .... they want to act like a 3 rd world muslim s#i+hole ,let’s put them there .
Never forget the 4th ID and OIF !....
What Erdogan wants is a caliphate he doesn’t want any Christians or moderates interfering with his islam.
Turkey is no ally of the US, even though they are nominally members of NATO. Turkey is not merely “reluctant”, they are actively bucking ANY effort to dislodge ISIS. They are de facto allies of ISIS, being the gateway by which ISIS recruits enter Syria, and also the brokers for the oil being shipped from the ISIS-held territories through the black market in petroleum.
If the Kurds were armed with modern military hardware, and given the permission to take anything they wanted from ISIS, including all the territory ISIS now holds, the Turks would be crapping bricks. Kurdistan would be a reality, and a very formidable one, taking a big slice out of Turkey as well as Iraq, and probably a similar slice out of Iran.
I just do not see a downside to throwing all our support to the Kurds.
Ataturk must be turning in his grave.
Ditto. But I don't expect that from TOTUS. He's send more troops to battle Ebola than ISIS ferchrisake.
What a crock, Turkey is no longer secular and has purged its military of those who were... We will take years to accept this fact! Those who opposed their entry to NATO are being vindicated (as if that means squat)!
ISIS is holding 30 Turks that were grabbed
when ISIS overran the Turk consulate in Mosul.
The latest crISIS is a force of 31,000 (at last report) holding a _ _ nation coalition at bay? Are you SERIOUS? Let the peaceniks in the “religion of peace” deal with this gang of “hijackers” of the “religion of peace”. The nations of the “religion of peace” have the manpower, money and military hardware to do it. Why are we paying these derelicts in D.C.?
We find out who our true friends are.
build a base in kurdistan. Get started on the runways.
Obama wants Assad out also so they might cut a deal at least on that piece. Both could agree to support a rebel group aligned with ISIS but using diff name. Obama will get rid of Assad and is ok with ISIS but must disrupt it to get beheadings off the news cycle. Other than that I think Obama is fine with a caliphate
If I remember right, Turkey spent decades trying to join the European community and NATO. Why should they be allowed to reconsider? Russia is no longer the only, or the biggest threat to Europe in the 21st Century.
What would it take to eject them from NATO?
The sooner the better.
I agree
He's referred to as "Spinner Mustafa," these days...
It’s in times like these that you find out who your friends are and Turkey is not one of them.
A Muslim, even a “secular” one, is never your friend.
LOL! "regional power" worried about 31,000 (last report) "hijackers" of their "religion". BALDERDASH psyops ALERT!
Please go into the Capital building with a bullhorn and shout it as many times as you can before you get arrested.
