President Barack Obama's push to raise the minimum wage, which has largely found success in liberal-leaning coastal states to date, could make headway in the conservative heartland in the November elections.
Voters in the Republican-controlled states of Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska and South Dakota will consider ballot initiatives in November that would raise the minimum wage above the national rate of $7.25 per hour. Activists on both sides of the issue say the proposals stand a good chance of passing.

Oh ..... Yeah!
Obama’s ABCNNBCBS press corpse has THEIR marching orders this week:
Push the minimum wage hike,
push “good” economic news
push stock market highs
push NFL (anti-male/women’s attacks/child abuse ALL the time
push “Obama is leading an Arab coalition (this time) ... against terrorism - but don’t mention Muslims.”
Another way of writing that headline...
Crashing the Future Employment Desires of Millions, Finds Hope in the U. S. Heartland
Which means price increases for just about everything. Thanks Obama!
I am okay with $10.10 per hour if they would make it to where no one can receive welfare benefits in excess of that wage.
That would be $10.10x40 hours = $404 per week per household. That would include food stamps, WIC, etc. If they need more, they need to get off their ass and start earning it.
This would not apply to those that are truly handicapped and in need of special assistance.
No one should receive free benefits in excess of those willing to work.
IOW nobody knows and if it fails it will quietly be allowed to drop off the liberal/marxist radar till next time.
What does the Left have against the poor and less-abled? If you’re paid $X/hr, you’re expected to produce _at_least_ that much, so anyone unable to must be replaced.
Just another scheme to drive more people onto welfare, increasing the numbers of people unable to attain the high-and-rising standards demanded by the Left.
In a normal, free-market, American economy, I’m against minimum wage laws.
But this is no longer a normal, free-market American economy. It’s an economy artificially flooded with foreign workers willing to take lower wages, driving Americans out of certain trades completely.
Had a fence built lately? Was your worker American?
The lowest-skilled American workers have no defense against a wage race to the bottom — there’s always a third-worlder ready to do their job for less.
Since minimum-wage Americans have been utterly betrayed by their government, which has allowed the labor market to be flooded with millions of low-skill workers, the very least this government can do for Americans is to enforce a minimum wage.
I’m guessing your job isn’t threatened by a recent arrival willing to do it for less than you’re being paid.
Meanwhile high tech sector jobs have depressed wages because of billion dollar liberals lying to congress about a lack of available local talent securing visas for low cost Indian workers.
As it is, HP only wants to pay $14-18 an hour for contracted degreed experienced professionals.
The title should say “The cancer of monopolized labor attacks the nation’s heart muscle”.
I’ve heard that Americans are unwilling to be “go getters” like the first generation Mexican immigrants.
Well to work the jobs they are working (in the kitchen or in construction or yardwork) you have to learn Spanish. It’s a closed shop.
Unless you are willing to be a company of one.
Article is all about using ballot initiatives for a $15 minimum wage to drive low-infos to the polls to vote for Democrats.
all while using free labor under the guise of "internships"
Abolish the minimum wage! Crush unionism! Restore American prosperity! Let freedom ring!
“I’ve heard that Americans are unwilling to be ‘go getters’”
Translation: Americans won’t work for thirty percent less than the job paid twenty years ago.
And why should they have to?
This is still their country. Isn’t it?
“It’s a form of price-fixing and thus is slavery.”
How do you not see that flooding the market with foreign workers is also a form of price fixing?
Since there’s nothing American workers can do about the flood, the only way to help them is push back on price fixing is with MORE price fixing: minimum wage.
At least minimum wage laws favor American workers.
Does anyone know why they want to increase minimum wage when they are already getting Earned Income Credit (free refund) EITC ? (It would only benefit people with no qualifying children for $496-how many of those are there?)
Minimum wage @ 7.25 = $15080 per year
Here is the 2014 tax year income limits, maximum EITC
Earned Income and adjusted gross income must each be less than:
$46,997 ($52,427 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
$43,756 ($49,186 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
$38,511 ($43,941 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
$14,590 ($20,020 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children
Tax Year 2014 maximum credit:
$6,143 with three or more qualifying children
$5,460 with two qualifying children
$3,305 with one qualifying child
$496 with no qualifying children
Investment income must be $3,350 or less for the year.
That, my FRiend, is false. The minimum wage, enacted by the devilish Frances Perkins during the Roosevelt Regime, actually undermines the power of the worker. It prohibits a employer and employee from agreeing on mutually satisfactory price for the labor. Thus the minimum is anti-liberty since it impedes the invisible hand of the open marketplace.
The abolition of the minimum wage would mean an unstoppable American economy and the reduction of Red China to a third-world backwater.
“Does anyone know why they want to increase minimum wage when they are already getting Earned Income Credit (free refund) EITC ?”
Excellent question which nobody talks about ...
The unions are pushing this because moving the minsimum wage up will also move up all the union employee wages. Also this increases the prospects of getting them unionized, if not already unionized. Also, higher pay means more dollars to the unions via union fees.
All this means that the unions can give more money to their favorite politicians.
“In a normal, free-market, American economy, Im against minimum wage laws.
But this is no longer a normal, free-market American economy. Its an economy artificially flooded with foreign workers willing to take lower wages, driving Americans out of certain trades completely.”
Raising the min wage means more illegals, not more money for the poor. Illegals will work under the table for cash, and more working poor get cut.
Raise min wages...prices go up, more are laid off, and the poor are worse off.
