'GREAT Escape actor Angus Lennie died last night in a nursing home in Acton, London, aged 84.

Glasgow-born Lennie featured in a number of roles across film and television, including the long-running ITV soap Crossroads.

But he was best known for playing Flying Officer Ives "The Mole" in the classic wartime escape drama.

Alongside him in that legendary film were Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough among other big actors. It comes less than a month after Attenborough, who played Big X in the Great Escape, died aged 90.

Lennie's film career also saw appearances in 633 Squadron, Tunes of Glory and 1969 musical Oh! What a Lovely War.'

Oh,we’re talking about Ives...that’s how I know him,the little guy with the strong Scottish accent. He was excellent indeed.Does anyone know if his character was based on any member of the real escapees...or was he some sort of “composite”?

I am voting NO. A strong Scotland in a strong UK.

Interesting.I seems to me that most Western nations hope the answer is "no" just as they hoped that Quebec wouldn't declare independence.

Good for you. I think “No” is going to win big. Of course as usual the media has to pretend it’s closer than it really is, better for ratings.

Many years ago, I was in the play, not the movie, Stalag 17.

It was to my amazement to have met met a former American POW from Stalag 11 who came with his daughter to see the show.

It was primarily a Polish POW camp. He was only a few American non coms kept there.

I distinctly remembering us setting up stairs to the stage so he could come up.

He took a look at the set and commented, "authentic."

Yes!!
Also, Montaigne was in “Balance of Terror”, which was basically a “remake” of the great submarine movie, “The Enemy Below”. Montaigne was the Romulan officer who was very gung-ho on attacking the Enterprise.

I loved Angus Lennie in “The Great Escape”, from the first time I saw that movie as a child, and I remember crying when he died. Such a great performance!!

RIP, Angus, and God Bless!!

You have much to be proud of. I love Scotland...the people, the history, the countryside, the cities. It’s all wonderful. I sincerely hope it remains in the UK.

There’s a documentary about the actor who played the German tunnel ferret. It was made by his son: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMCkLw1Amqg

James Coburn and Charles Bronson are also gone. I cannot come up with a name of anybody who starred in The Great Escape who is still alive.

Did you mean James Garner?
