I agree completely - some kids need that swat on the butt, some can be talked to and understand what they did wrong. I have no problem with a swat - repeatedly hitting a child with any object, enough to cause what he did to that 4 year olds legs is disgusting.

My black friend's dad was a good man. Raised his three boys to be respectful and hard workers, and they volunteered plenty at church. He was strict and kept them in line. You're right, not that many cohesive families today where the dad sticks around and does the right things.
My dad threatened me with a belt whipping from early on, but it never came to that. He never laid a hand on me. The fear of the belt kept me in line. In school, I got punished. School admins had paddles to swat us. In middle school, teachers would force us kids to paddle each other. Somewhat humiliating for two of us to go in front of the class, and take turns swatting each other with a paddle. But it worked at making us behave. Principal had different size paddles with holes in them; they really hurt. Us kids took it, never complained, and parents never got upset about it.
Kids today get away with bad behavior because they can, everyone is in fear of being jailed for abusing kids. A little spanking can't hurt much but is no longer administered. Crazy times.
The gigantic freakishly athletic pro football player couldn’t even avoid hitting a four year old on the scrotum with a switch that was hitting hard enough to leave cuts. I mean come on.

So many of the posts here have been about a spanking someone got as a teenager - this was a four year old child who doesn’t even live with this man most of the time. Peterson allegedly texted this childs mother saying he had hit his testicle in the process but stated again no one was going to act up around him. I’ve been madder than hell at a child before but never got so out of control that I would have done anything near that. Again, this was a four year old - not a teen. Spanking and beating are two different things.

My school entry inservice at home was this.
You get in trouble at school, you come home and get the same punishment you got there. That teacher gets the same respect you give us. Don’t forget it.
