The Pennsylvania trooper killed in a Friday night police barracks shooting was a hardworking, “stand-up guy,” his friends say.

Now, Bryon Dickson’s heartbroken friends and family will lay him to rest.

The father-of-two was the only officer killed when a gunman "ambushed" police barracks in Blooming Grove Township during a trooper shift-change, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said at a Saturday press conference. A second trooper, Alex Douglass, was also injured.

And the killer could still be on the loose. An overnight manhunt lead to the questioning of a person of interest — but no suspects.

Gov. Tom Corbett wanted to visit the area, but officials warned him to stay away when a “a very dangerous, armed criminal” has not been caught, the Times-Tribune reported.

Still, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan assured residents the shooter is not believed to be dangerous to the public.

Dickson, a 2007 police academy graduate, worked near Philadelphia for most of his career, but moved to the Northeast Pennsylvania barracks a few months ago to be closer to his family, friends told the Times-Tribune. AP Photo/Scranton Times & Tribune, Butch Comegys State police Commissioner Frank Noonan said an overnight shooting at a Pennsylvania police barracks was likely an attack on the state force. "He was very, very work oriented," Melissa Contorno, a friend of the Dickson family, said. "He was all about it. He was a stand-up guy.”

He leaves behind a wife and two sons: a kindergartener and a second-grader.

“This is a traumatic event. It has touched us to the core that such an event can happen,” Noonan said.

The gunman escaped after the 11 p.m. shooting, and law enforcement officials from New York and New Jersey descended on northeastern Pennsylvania to help with the search.

On Saturday morning, police named a person of interest and detained him for questioning.

He is not in custody and has not been charged with any crimes, Trooper Connie Devens, spokeswoman for Troop R in Dunmore, told the newspaper.

Corbett ordered flags in the area to be flown at half-staff in Dickson’s honor, WNEP reported.

“Every attack on an officer of the law is an attack on our state, our country and civilized society,” he said in a statement.

Douglass, the injured trooper was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.

Law enforcement officials from New York and New Jersey descended on northeastern Pennsylvania early Saturday to help with the search.

Blooming Grove Township is about 35 miles east of Scranton.

But you’re mistaken. It was an angry middle aged white guy in a white panel van. Didn’t Chief Moose tell us so?

“John Allen Mohammed sentenced 2003, executed 2009.”

In reality, an Islamic terrorist operation. Our leaders refuse to identify it as such.

"John Allen Mohammed sentenced 2003, executed 2009"

Some curious trivia on that one...Mohammed purchased the Chevrolet Caprice used in the spree on 9/11/02.

His time of death was recorded as 9:11 p.m. on 11/10/09.

Yes, the Beltway Sniper admitted to admiring Osama Bin-Laden and Al-qaeda and doing their work. Sort of like Obama perhaps being a hidden Islamist operative.

Yep. I remember when they caught the jag-off. He was identified as a military veteran, not a Muslim. As if it was his military service that turned him into a killer, not his conversion to the Religion of Peace.

Then, there was his bum-chum Malvo, whom they refused to identify as an illegal alien.

It sounds like they think it was a personal attack.

The officer may have been dirty and stepped on the wrong toes....it was a well thought out hit and the perpetrator knew the routine ...we all put our pants on the same way....the public is tiring of being fleeced and watching the hard work and blood spilled in wars to be pissed away by politicians who are surrounded by men such as the deceased?....I find it tough to listen to politicians preach restrictive gun laws while they are surrounded by them...this act was not just a lone wolf...there is more to this than what is being reported....I still offer my thoughts and prayers to the wife and children left behind.

Maybe he’s not a killer; maybe it’s all just a big misunderstanding due to a breakdown in communication.

When you read the comments now, about stories like this, it’s interesting how much good will the police have lost over the last few years. Just saying...

Did any of the targeted Pennsylvannia State Troopers have anything to do with the beating of Robert Leone?

Maybe involved in one of those highway confiscations of property that are so popular in Philly?

Does at least sound personal and planned on the surface

But why attack the LEO at the police barracks? Seems like it would be a lot smarter to plan your attack at some out of the way place. The perp must be more than a little wacko.

Maybe they won’t really know if he is or isn’t until somebody actually observes him.

We, in western MD were all just waiting for them to show up here.

Turns out, they had targets all around my area mapped on their laptop.

FReeper Zygoat watched it all go down on I70 when a trucker spotted a suspicious vehicle in a rest stop and reported everything, as it happened.

Those of us who never sleep knew it was happening long before it made the news.

It was a crazy night.

Used to be the right would go to bat for the police no matter what. I just can’t do it anymore. I don’t know if this State Trooper ever did anything wrong but there is a problem in Pennsylvannia. 150 cops arrested since ‘94? Betcha that’s the tip of the iceberg.

I’m pretty sure this is Trooper Dickson’s Facebook page. Looks like he may have been a Marine vet.
