Minnesota Vikings Running Back Adrian Peterson Indicted on Child Abuse Charge (switched his child)
NBC 4 ^ | Sep 12, 2014 | Sam Schulz

Posted on 09/12/2014 7:42:44 PM PDT by xzins

An arrest warrant was issued Friday in Texas for Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson after he was indicted on a child abuse charge for using a branch to spank his son. He won't play in Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

The Vikings said they had deactivated Peterson for Sunday's game Friday evening, just after his lawyer and the Montgomery County sheriff's office confirmed he was

Read Adrian Peterson's lawyer Rusty Hardin's statement in full below:

Adrian Peterson has been informed that he was indicted by a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas for Injury to a Child. The charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son. This indictment follows Adrian’s full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgment as a parent to discipline his son. He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in east Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened. He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours. Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury.

Probably pretty good since he doesn’t live with any of them on a permanent basis. Blood generally makes other family members react. Not they some wouldn’t feel to keep mum for financial reasons, but not all.

I grew up where it got 40 to 50 below with wind on a regular basis. Where sudden summer storms could spawn tornadoes.

Lots of ways to die. This was too far.

We normally got switched through our clothing, but I don’t recall bleeding. I do remember switch marks, though.

She's still on her drive home alone. I'll stick with her, regardless of names you want to call me.

She's wanting to discuss who did what with which at school with the grandkids.

Belt, switch, paddle... Been on the receiving end of all of them. Belt was the worst, imo, because my father was a big brute and knew how to swing that sucker - which isn’t to say I’m against using any of them as long as you don’t go overboard. Sounds like Peterson did that.

Some insights from Dr Charles Stanley on discipline for children.

What sort of injuries? Didn’t see that in the article. My
mom used to use switch on me - and I had to go cut it off the bush.

It stung like the dickens, but didn’t cause any injuries other than a few red welts that went away before bedtime.

Now when we weren’t where a switch was available, she would use whatever was handy, two by four, shoe, fly swatter. Dad never ever spanked, but we all did what he said.

For some reason we always challenged Mom and then had to take the punishment. Sometimes, even after she warned us: one more time and I’m gonna knock your heads together she said once.

We looked at each other and burst out in laughter. Promptly did the deed again. She promptly cracked our heads together. We quit laughing, cause it really hurt.

They’d probably lock her up and throw away the key.

It’s all so unreal too. Here’s this guy indicted for using a switch. We have people around here that beat their kids black and blue, and next thing you know DFS has put them right back in the home.

Check into many cases of children who have died due to child abuse, and you would find that often they have had severe injury time, time and time again. I really don’t understand the system and their rationale.

I’m with you. I wasn’t switched, but the belt sometimes left a mark. I generally needed it if I got it, and I’m better off for it.

Personally, I always used my hand because then I knew exactly how it felt. However, there were times that finger marks were left. If you ask my kids, they’ll tell you the same I say about my Dad.

If I had ever used a switch, I’m sure I would have drawn blood at times. But cars, horses and rattlesnakes and cactus can be a lot more dangerous, and whatever it took to make a young child listen was better than a single time of not listening when things got hairy.

I’m telling you this; When children were raised, and disciplined as they were 50 years ago, this was not uncommon.

Now, people like you want to try this whole new touchy feely way of raising kids, feral children, especially in the Black community.

The history is irrefutable, although I’m sure you’ll continue to try, the ways of 50 years ago produced far more civilized young people.

I know you don’t want more Travon Martins, but you’re being too afraid to allow those who know best, the parents, to do the things needed to prevent them growing up and entering our society as feral beings.

You may have the last word.

It looked like about 10 or so switch marks, and we’re told that they bled.

Having been switched before, that little slender limb moves real quick. A mom with a switch was a fearful thing. You could get switched 5 times in a second or two....back forth back forth back...

So, I don’t consider 10 swipes to take more than a few seconds. They would have been delivered before they even began to bleed. They bled because apparently the kid was bare legged. And we’re talking a pro athlete. The Ray Rice story shows how strong these people are.

So, I don’t necessarily see an out of control rage here. I’m betting on a quick switching by a guy stronger than he probably realizes against a bare-legged kid in a short amount of time with welts rising afterwards to a breaking/bleeding point.

I’ve been saying that Greg Abbott seems to be running a non-campaign. I have hardly heard a peep from him. I hope Wendy doesn’t fool us all.

When objectively analyzed what is generally found is that people who attribute their adult ethical behavior to spanking are actually confounding general good parenting with hitting. I suspect that your parents did a lot of other non-spanking interventions in your life, most of them positive. Not the least of which would be loving each other, working for the family (the institution itself), setting standards and expectations and giving responsibility along with consequences - both good and bad. That’s how you build a good person. No spanking needed.

John Gill:

“Verse 24

He that spareth his rod hateth his son,.... Who withholds or withdraws his rod of correction, which is in his hand, which he has power to use, and ought to exercise at proper times; he, instead of loving his son, may be said to hate him; for such fond love is no better than hatred; and, if he really hated him, he could scarcely do a more ill thing by him than not to correct him for a fault; which was the sin of good old Eli, and both he and his sons suffered for it;

but he that loveth him; that has a true love for his son, and a hearty concern for his welfare and future good; he will regulate his affections by his judgment, and not give way to a fond passion, to the prejudice of his child: but he

chasteneth him betimes, or “in the morning”F24; in the morning of his infancy, before vicious habits are contracted, or he is accustomed to sinning, and hardened in it; or as soon as a crime is perpetrated, before it is forgot or repeated: or every morning, as Jarchi and Aben Ezra; that is, continually, as often as it is necessary, or as faults are committed.”

There are many ways to discipline which don’t involve leaving bloody welts. All of them work better.
