Politico: Why didn’t GOP rescue Democrats from their own foolish constitutional amendment?
Hot Air ^ | 9 Sep 2014 | Noah Rothman

Conservatives are often quick to accuse the press of exhibiting bias in their coverage of American politics. Sometimes, accusations of subtle or even unconscious favoritism in the political press are well-founded. Other times, bias is merely perceived. The movement by Senate Democrats to amend the Constitution in order to restrict the freedom of protected political speech contained within the First Amendment has, however, exposed a rather obvious blind spot in the political media.

On Monday, the Senate passed a procedural vote to allow debate on the Democrats proposed amendment to the Constitution which would reverse a number of Supreme Court decisions that overturned laws aimed at curtailing the public’s ability to spend money on political speech. From 1976’s Buckley v. Valeo, to 2010’s Citizens United v. FEC, to just this past summer in McCutcheon v. FEC, the Court has been engaged in a systematic rolling back of the restrictions imposed on political speech by the Congress for over a generation.

Democrats in Congress know their voters want to put an end to that and, lacking any other realistic agenda to satisfy them, liberal officeholders have embarked on an effort to delude their base into believing that the United States Constitution should and can be reshaped and the First Amendment rewritten.

Democrats oppose the First Amendment.

DemocRATS are greatly fed campaign monies by muslims who do now want any free speech especially against them.

liberal officeholders have embarked on an effort to delude their base into believing that the United States Constitution ... can be reshaped and the First Amendment rewritten.

Kind of a silly remark. It CAN be done, if you meet the tremendously difficult requirements.

It won't happen, of course, as it shouldn't.

But there are no limits on what can be done via an amendment. One could establish an absolute monarchy on the Nork lines, if properly passed and ratified.

BINGO! You have found the source of all the apparently anti-American bias in the Democrat party - funded in large part by Islamic sources, and augmented by the pro-Islamic support by the international Soros network, which manages to make the influence of “Rothschild” relatively insignificant.

There was as time when populist politicians spoke of “Malefactors of Great Wealth”, but at the time, those “malefactors” were almost exclusively home-grown US capitalist entrepreneurs, that had hauled themselves up by aggressive means, but it was all native capital and with US labor.

The dems think that this is a winning issue? Only to its lunatic fringe base. Not anyone else. Have the dems bring up this amendment. It will NOT get anywhere near 2/3’s the vote in the senate. Niether in the House. It is a dead issue. The Politico is mad because it is making the dems as anti-American jackasses (which they are). But now it is for the public to see.....just in time for the elections.

"Democrats oppose the First Amendment."

If the Senate Republicans did not oppose the Democrats on this does that mean the GOPe opposes the First Amendment?

If this can be wrapped “neatly in a bow” the media might be able to condition enough people; especially if the cause relates to glorifying how one gets their genitals “off”/reproductive control.

You've put your finger right on it. The 'rats bring this stuff up to please their nutjob base, knowing it will never go anywhere because the GOP will squash it.

But in a rare moment of savvy political jujitsu, McConnell convinced his caucus to let this come to the floor for full discussion and vote, to expose the cynical ploy for exactly what it is. Now the 'rats will be forced to go on record, and they either honk off their nutjob base or alienate the mushy middle by aligning with the nutjobs.

And even if it does pass the Senate, it'll never get through the House, let alone 38 states.

I give the so-called GOP leadership lots of grief, but this was a smart play and they should be applauded for it. The 'rats are trying to get too cute by half with some of these legislative games, and it's nice to hit them with their own weapons.

Which part controls most State legislatures where such an Amendment will be debated? Seems to me having every State Legislature up in arms and making a big deal out of this Democrat Amendment trying to destroy the First Amendment is a good thing for everyone but the democrat fascist party.

The GOPe (the other half of our one-party system) is in favor of power, and plans to use all of BHO’s extra-constitutional achievements for their own ends if/when they take the White House.
