Having managed two gun shops in my past, I too prefer the shotgun, loaded with birdshot—not buckshot, as the best home protection choice for untrained persons. For my own use, I like a nice slow Mack Truck, a .45 ACP.
For those to hoplophobic to use a gun, Pepperspray Is a lot better than nothing. . . and the higher the heat the better.
No, Georgia, wasp spray is not even worth a mention, much less "legitimate." The active ingredient Pyrethrins, which are insect nerve agent poisons for insects, are only mildly poisonous to humans and are OK for topical application and simply are not effective in stopping intruders. They are, at best, an irritant that may just make the attackers angry enough to kill you when they merely intended to rob you. They will not incapacitate or temporarily blind them like Pepper spray will. The use of wasp spray, even though Snopes gives it a liberal pass, is an urban legend. If you don't want a gun, you need a very directional, good range (15-20 feet), capsaicin spray with a high Scoville rating, the higher the better. The cost of these is a reasonable $8 to $16.
Yeh I hear ya. I was trying to be kind. We have some Bear spray which will wind your watch but its out in the garage in our backpack. We keep the real meal deal on each bedside table. There is no substitute. :-)
When they hear that rack you have given away your position, they know you have a shotgun and know in which direction to direct fire. Bang bang, you're dead.

I'm glad you do. But Georgia, sometimes being kind is not the right thing to do. Sometimes the right thing to do is to point out the idea is a real stinking pile of dog turds. GRIN. Doing so might save some poor woman her life or her families' because she recognizes the truth and gets the good stuff. . . instead of the pile of turd advice passed on by know nothings who read it on the Internet, so it must be true.
