Fast food workers take to streets to demand $15 minimum wage

Dozens of fast food workers have been arrested at protests around the country where they are demanding higher pay at popular restaurants such as McDonald's, Burger King and Domino's.

Fast food workers in New York City, Chicago, Detroit and possibly more cities were arrested for blocking traffic in front of restaurants early Thursday morning, while thousands more continued protesting peacefully, according to news reports.

Backed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), fast food workers in 150 cities are walking off the job and picking up picket signs to demand that they be paid no less than $15 per hour. This is the seventh strike organized by the Fast Food Forward campaign since November 2012, when the campaign began. "At Thursday’s strike, fast food restaurants will see firsthand that workers are willing to do whatever it takes to win $15 and union rights,” said Kendall Fells, the organizing director at Fast Food Forward, which receives funding from the SEIU.

The fast food workers started the demonstrations early Thursday morning. At a McDonald's in New York City's Times Square, about 300 people showed up to protest, with reports indicating at least 19 were arrested.

In Detroit, about 200 fast food workers protested outside a McDonald's on the east side of the city with 42 people being arrested, according to reports.

The demonstrations also spread to Chicago, where about 150 fast food workers protested outside a popular Windy City McDonald's with another 23 being arrested.

The fast food workers said earlier this week that some were planning to be arrested during the protests. In many cases, they were arrested for blocking traffic, while people who picketed peacefully were not taken into custody.

The restaurant workers say anything less than $15 an hour is not a livable wage.

I remember the Automat (Automatt?) in NYC! I thought it was cool, the adults who were paying for it thought the food sucked.

Once again, they were probably right.

I don’t think Americans want to pay $15-$20 for their fast-food lunches.

Their motto should be:

“15. It’s the new 8.”

[ It’s pretty clear that computers and robots will replace most jobs within 20-50 years. I’d think the better way to go would be to make no minimum wages. The country with the highest employment, Switzerland, has no bottom level. That means anybody, regardless of how poorly they perform, can find a job doing something. ]

Mandatory gun ownership too....and I think recently they kicked a bunch of ROPers out of their country too....

How do you apply for Swiss Citizenship?

What these people don’t understand is this: The unions will be demanding dues in the amount of your raise.

Along with this: Your employer will have to lay off about 1/4 to 1/3 of his staff because he cannot pay the bills with such a raise to every member of the staff.

I heard this: “All that money they make - Billions” and they can’t give us $15/hr ..??

Never mind that this extremely ignorant person has no clue what the owner has to spend with his “billions” of dollars; wages, taxes, business supplies (napkins, plastic silverware, containers to serve food, etc. But, don’t forget all the condiments, mustard, onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, etc. etc. etc.

Then, you have to add up what it takes to keep the place clean - cleaning supplies - soap, window cleaner, disinfectant wiped over each table and the counter after closing .. just in case somebody came in with some sort of bacteria or virus ..???????? This stuff isn’t cheap.

Oh yeah, at a minimum - you’ll now be making more per hour than the owner .. just how long do you think the business will survive ..???????????????????????????????

I rest my case..!!!!!!!!

[ While striking, you might want to think about some elementary economics.

I know, math - even simple econ math - is hard for liberals.b ]

They cannot even make change without the computer.... How do you expect them to grasp elementary economics beyond a kindergarden “why don’t we print everyone money” level....

[ I was listening to the FOX news update on the radio and they interviewed one of these “gourmet” chefs and she complained she couldn’t support herself and her five kids on $8 an hour. What else needs to be said about that statement and the havoc the Democratic Party has wreaked on America. ]

Hell at 8 bucks an hour and a SNAP and an EBT card and other assitence it is almost like they ALREADY make 15 and hour.....

Maybe she is too dumb to apply for government cheese...

Or maybe the dims will push for 15 then “Compromise” by opening up the SNAP and EBT systems to MORE people....

[ Minimum wage jobs are not supposed to provide “a living wage, nor were they ever intended to. Minimum wage jobs are “ladder” jobs or “stepping stone” jobs. We held such jobs when we were in high school, and sometimes even college. They are resumé jobs. ]

Bush gave us the McJob, Obama is giving us the McCareer

[ The formula for a successful restaurant expenditures I was taught in college was 30% utilities+ 30% supplies+ 30% wages= 10% profit.

If you increase any expenditure without adding any cost or greatly reducing quality, your profit goes down. (econ 101)

I have worked in restaurants where the profit margin was much lower than 10%.

These places will close when you double the cost of labor.
Of course the big chains wont do so well either.

When all of the businesses go out of business, who will be able to buy the products that no one will be able to sell? ]

The formula for a successful restaurant expenditures I was taught in college was 30% utilities+ 30% supplies+ 30% wages= 10% profit.

Replace the 30% utilities with 40% utilties via robot cookers, and you can lower wages to 10% ie. just a few manager and tech staff on hand... then you can increase profit to 20%

Tens of thousands of 62-65 YO people are drawing early social security. I believe the max they could earn before losing any benefits is $1500/month, or about $375/week. Those that want to will find a home at a fast food restaurant, putting these strikers back on the street.

EXCELLENT POINT. One thing about liberals is they DON'T want to learn from real examples in which their policies are implemented. When Seattle SEA-TAC implemented a high minimum wage it hurt the very people it was supposed to help. This is because, as you point out above, job poachers moved in from other areas for higher wage jobs (also combined with job losses due to higher wages). So rather than learn from this experience, liberals doubled down and want to expand a higher minimum wage to all of Seattle.

(possibly with a couple of courtesy ordering machines just for the very few visitors without cell phones)

indeed and it would allow people to more easily customise their orders like no ketsup etc... without having hte order taker getting it wrong...

I don’t have to tolerate the tyranny of rude servers, high prices and half full beverages. Today I declare my independence from fast food.
