CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) A newly discovered asteroid will pass by Earth this weekend.
At closest approach Sunday, the 60-foot rock will pass a safe 25,000 miles over New Zealand. Thats about one-tenth the distance between here and the moon. Its also beyond the orbit of our highest communication and weather satellites.

Maybe we could pretend that it has a “companion” traveler.
That oughta be good for some phony headlines...

Above the orbit of our satellites, but I wonder how close they are with that measurement. They orbit at 22,500 miles IIRC. 2,500 miles seems like lots of room, but they don’t have to be wrong by much for us to say bye-bye GPS and TV.

I wish one would just hit us and get it over with.I find myself getting nostalgic for the Cold War, when either the USA or the USSR could destroy the world many times over. Seemed like the world was a safer place, and we weren't hearing about the latest ISIS beheadings.

Too bad we cant catch it and bring it into orbit for exploitation! Methinks you ought to write up a research plan on how to do just that and get your share of tens of millions of research dollars this government pisses away every year.
I'd rather my tax dollars were wasted studying how to lasso a meteor and bring it into orbit, rather than why lezbo's are fat....

Its that newly discovered part that makes me nervous...Me too. It makes you wonder how many are headed our way that haven't been discovered yet.

In astronomic terms, 25,000 miles is incredibly close! However, an inch is as good as a mile they say.

It would have made a fine candidate to try something else on it, should be easy enough to reach. Would have made a nice test bed. Problem is, these "small" objects are too hard to detect generally, until it is "too late".
That said, a direct hit by this thing would be catastrophic to a small town sized area. The equivalent of a small atomic bomb.

Depends on what is in it.
Aluminum can be refined and used for reaction mass among other things. Silicon can be used in electronics, like solar cells Water is valuable for obvious reason. Carbon can be used to make plastics. And if it is metallic we might hit the big time!
Don’t have to worry about energy - just need to build a solar array.
Design a bootstrap program, refine the materials into 3D printer compatible format, put a 3D printer on and GM the the hell out it.

60 feet across? If it were to hit the earth, it wouldn’t even be a big deal.
