US Warplanes Begin Striking Mosul
BasNews, Erbil ^ | 04.09.2014 | Hawar Abdulrazaq

Since early Thursday morning, United States military planes have begun shelling the outskirts of Mosul, a Sunni-majority city in northern Iraq and military post of Islamic State (IS) militants.

According to a source from the Peshmerga forces stationed near Mosul, US warplanes began bombing the hideouts of IS militants in Mosul and the surrounding areas in the ill-lit hours of dawn.

The current shelling began in the neighborhoods of Somar and Intisari, which are on the outskirt of Mosul.

US planes also attacked high buildings in the city that have been used as hideouts and supply storage by the Jihadi group.

A few days ago, US warplanes dropped thousands of paper leaflets on Mosul, urging residents to stay clear of places occupied by the Islamic State militants.

Since early June, Mosul and other Sunni areas in northern Iraq have been overrun by the Islamic State, looking to create a new caliphate. Ever since their brutal occupation, thousands of people from Mosul have fled to the Kurdistan Region.

The cartridge case is shorter, but the projectile is identical.

I guess you need less propellant if you are only shooting DOWNWARD.

Leave. Return and bomb the junior varsity team. How odd.

Good. the only acceptable outcome is the total destruction of “IS”.

IIRC, both the “Spookie” and “Spectre” gunships carry cannon, so technically the term “shell” might be applicable - by a product of the Columbia University Skrewl of Urinalism, anyway.

AC-130 is the only plane that can "shell" a target I know of

The cartridge can be shorter because there is no need for it to gain altitude. lol

Even though we all know Obama's heart is not in this fight, our pilots are ALL IN.. Mostly F/A-18's I would imagine. One hell of a great aircraft with high reliability and deadly strike capability.

BADAZZ and still looks GREAT!

I just love it when you talk dirty! And I still miss napalm which should be really useful in burning the rags off the goat humpers. Whether it gets sent by shell, bomb cannon or camel.

There’s that and the desire to not rip the bottom out of the air frame. I always thot the 106 recoilless would have been a better choice but somebody would have to catch the breech blast in a paper bag?

I think YouTube videos of air strikes are an effective PsyOps strategy.
The videos should include screams.

The enemy is weak. Very weak. It is evident in every tactic they use.

Big bombs and Seal Teams are more effective than chicken s___murders.

My God, that is beautiful.

A friend of mine had an XBOX 360 and Call of Duty 4. The AC-130 Mission was one of my favorites.

The Focke Wulf 190 was equipped with two 13-mm MG-131 machine guns in fuselage; two 20-mm MG 151-20E cannons in wing roots and two more in the outer wing panels.

Spooky was a DC3! Amazing aircraft that DC3, probably the best designed airframe of the 1930s. DC3s are (IIRC) still flying commercially in Alaska. almost 80 years after first flight.

Another legend with the exact-same engines was the PBY "Flying Boat", that made itself a legend since the day it was designed. One sighted the Bismarck spelling its destruction. Others rescued "coast watchers" to safety from New Guinea. Many downed aviators were rescued at sea. Another sighted a mini-Japanese submarine outside Pearl Harbor just before the attack. It was sunk, but the attack proceeded that Sunday morning.
