Leaders of countries sharing borders with Russia led the way in demanding tougher action against what they see as blatant aggression on their doorstep.
Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite bluntly called for the West to wake up, and appeared to urge Nato to give significant military aid to Kiev.
Russia is at war against Ukraine and that is a country which wants to be part of Europe. Russia is practically at war against Europe, she said.
She lambasted previous sanctions as a big mistake because they were too general.
Lithuania is one of at least six states believed to have signed up to a new British-led Nato rapid-reaction force, the formation of which is expected to be announced this week by David Cameron as Wales hosts the most important Alliance gathering since the end of the Cold War.
Denmark, Latvia, Estonia, Norway and the Netherlands will also join the 10,000-troop bid to deter Putin from what the West sees as an attempt to redraw the frontiers of Europe.
A key concern is that he intends to use his military might to impose a new statelet within Ukraine called Novorossiya or New Russia. What remains of Ukraine could be left with no coastline if the plan goes through.
A diplomat said: Putin is obsessed with Novorossiya, territory won for the Romanovs by Catherine the Great. He wants it back.
'But the so-called rebels in this region of eastern Ukraine, who he praised for keeping Kievs army at bay, are his own soldiers, using his latest military equipment. Lets not fool ourselves about the acute dangers.
Putins use of the Tsarist name of Novorossiya is sending shudders through Europe. While it includes the Donetsk and Lugansk regions ....it also includes such major cities as Kharkiv, Kherson and Odessa.

You can hide behind “allied dead” or you can discuss the current situation in the Ukraine. I seem to recall Democrats hiding behind John Kerry or Jack Murtha’s medals and uniforms when called out on their wrong-headed notions some years ago.
Maybe at first, but do you realize how fast the Chicom's are militarizing their country. Give a 10 year period of exponential growth, and establish monster ports in the middle east, and Crimea, and your comments about the Chicoms's Navy will be truly flawed.
Give me your address so we can meet up. I think you’ll be very unpleasantly surprised when you see me. Disabled or not, I’ll learn you about calling someone a “Westboro Baptist” protester. Go to Youtube and watch what William F. Buckley, Jr. said to Gore Vidal when Vidal called him a crypto-Nazi to get an idea.
Fantasies, I can’t believe Putin’s shirtless macho man routine has been so effective, that it has some here terrified of the man and his one country, to the extent that they think that Russia now can defeat NATO, the former Warsaw Pact countries, and the United States combined.
I’m not hiding behind them, I’m defending honorable men and women who gave their lives in war, assisting the US after we were attacked. They deserve better than being called limp wristed gays by the likes of you.
Some commenters bring up the chance of nuclear warfare. Infantry-related soldiers full well know a thousand drills over, that the Russians wouldn’t stand a chance on an NBC battlefield. Another thing is known about Russian leadership. Once a blowhard, always a blowhard. They’re blowing smoke, and only an S-2 would believe them. ;-)
You do know that European militaries have accepted homosexuals for decades now, don’t you?
Separate those numbers to subtract all USA contributions.
I’m just an old Cold War veteran, with real life experience working with “NATO” forces, and much of that before the EU was as big an entity/enemy as it is now.
1.The Brits along the entire EU are self-declared economic enemies of the USA. Not honest competitors, self-declared enemies.
That was the basis of the formation of the EU.
2.Russia has aligned themselves with elements of the Islamic terrorists.
3.China kills them.
The world is a very messy place, filled with a lot of evil people who are “leaders”. Most of them are stupid.
Great strategizing! What you’re really saying is that I’m right but in some future period after an unfeasible growth rate and without taking into account any other factors, I’ll be wrong!
Why do you keep ignoring the possibility of a Russian alliance with the Moslems and the Chicoms. Add that to the scenario discussion, and then I will listen to you. No one ever thought that Russia would win on its own., and Putin knows that.
Ukraine has been acting on its own. You should acknowledge that.
So? Any man who gives his life in the course of duty to defend me and mine deserves my gratitude not cheap insults. You really should take some time to consider your comment sand ponder whether you’re on the right track or not.
Why would you subtract NATO numbers from the NATO numbers?
“”By troop numbers, NATO also held a lopsided advantage over any other nation, with a total of 3,370,000 servicemembers in 2013, according to NATOs statistics. This contrasts with Russias 766,000 troops””
Remember that you guys are trying to sell Russia as a massive offensive force, attacking NATO nations and defeating them over a vast geographical mass and obstacles and borders, rather than them beating tail back onto their own soil.
They can go home and stay there, but they cannot stand up to NATO.
Like what happens after Russian China, and OPEC cut the west off from oil?. Think it through man.
I wasn’t “insulting” the European militaries, I was describing them, genius.
Putin is fully aware that the "world" no longer knows or chooses how to wage REAL war .... his little fifedom is in no danger; he knows it, however.
Right, you don’t count calling allied war dead ‘beta-men, gays and womyn’ as an insult, it’s a description. Dude, you are one sad case.
If you have breaking news of a new Warsaw Pact military alliance to defend Russia in Europe against NATO, made up of China, Russia, and the Middle Eastern nations, then share it.
