How Democrats might goad the GOP into shutting down the government
The Week ^ | 08/27/2014 | Marc Ambinder

President Obama is expected to announce by mid-September whether he will circumvent a recalcitrant Congress and press ahead with immigration reform on his own terms. "Executive action," as it's come to be known, could be as robust and consequential as providing de-facto earned amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants now living in the shadows. That decision would reverberate widely. Democrats have usually been afraid that if Obama decided to showcase the apogee of presidential power, the counter-reaction among conservatives and revanchists would cost Democrats an intolerably high political price.

Now, though, after all the midterm primaries are done, as the cluster of Democratic congressional seats that appear in jeopardy continues to grow, some in the party are rethinking their reflexive fears. They've come up with a scenario where an aggressive Obama executive order on immigration helps them keep Republican margins in check in November, helps them keeps the Senate, and even gives them a chance to take control of the House.

It's as far-fetched as vegan food is tasty, but here's the basic plot line:

In September, Obama signs an executive order that expands the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrival program (DACA) to cover an additional hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of undocumented immigrants, including parents and family members of DREAMers, and older DREAMers (who were over 30 years old when Obama first announced the deferrals).

The GOP, which voted to end DACA before the start of the August recess, would respond by "exploding in anger," which is in quotes because their anger is as much for show as it is about any principled solution to the immigration crisis.

The Republican voting base would demand that the House GOP punish Obama for acting like a king. Nativists would get traction on talk radio.

Every conservative presidential candidate must campaign on the promise of amnesty.

Amnesty for failing to pay Taxes.

Amnesty for concealed carry.

Amnesty for violating EPA regs..

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Given the federal government's constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers, consider that even a permanent shut down is arguably not far from what the Founding States had in mind when they established the federal government.

In other words, citizens need to work with their state lawmakers, not the feds, to establish the government services that they want.

As a side note concerning the federal government's constitutionally limited powers, please consider the following. The states would sure be a dull, boring place to grow up and live in if parents were to make sure that their children were taught about the federal government's constitutionally limited powers as the Founding States had intended for those powers to be understood. /sarc

Thomas Jefferson had put it this way:

“Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress and Assemblies, judges and governors, shall all become wolves [emphasis added]. It seems to be the law of our general nature.” - Thomas Jefferson (Letter to Edward Carrington January 16, 1787)

In fact, forget about traditional salesman / sucker cliches like "buying the Brooklyn Bridge." Voters now have to deal with the problem that they have foolishly traded their votes for constitutionally nonexistent rights, federal spending programs and restrictive federal regulations which are likewise based on constitutionally nonexistant federal government powers.

The “System” was intentionally designed to be run by the House of Representatives (i.e., “we the people”).

The senate and the president were to be little more than figureheads.

All the House of Representatives have to do is “nothing”,
and the whole system shuts down.

“It’s as far-fetched as vegan food is tasty”

That means that it’s not far-fetched at all.

What this country needs is a good five-cent editor.

Don’t shut it down. Dismantle it down to the Constitutional limits of the federal government. Wield the 10th Amendment like a sledgehammer!

Of course, the pink elephant in the room is the Dems shut the govt down themselves for 2 days just a few weeks ago - for foreign diplomats. Nobody said much about it at the time, tho.

would cost Democrats an intolerably high political price.

If the RNC had its way the Dems would have to drink their Chablis at room temperature. That'd larn 'em!

I doubt the GOP is ever going to do what is right again when it comes to “shutting down the government”. The commies and their toads in the state controlled “media” have the blame game down perfect and the clowns that infest this country are too stupid to figure it out.

All the House has to do is vote for appropriations. They should vote to fund the government at some level, preferably below the current level. No talk of shutdown,. Just pass a bill funding every department at some level and send it to the Senate. If Reid and the Senate vote no, it is the Senate shutting down the government, not the House. As long as no Republican gets off message and brags about provoking a shutdown they can win.

When Reid complains the bill doesn’t have enough spending or whatever, Boehner and the House leadership can state they have sent the Senate a bill to fund the government and they hope the Senate won’t play politics and hurt the people by shutting down the government. Turn the tables on Reid and Obama. Play the good guy and force Reid into a position where he votes to shut the government down. Tell the media and the people if Reid and the Senate want to propose more spending, they House will be happy to consider any supplemental appropriations bills the House a Democrats want toot ally introduce. For now the Senate must pass and the President must sign the bill already passed by the House in order to avoid a shutdown. We’ve done our job to fund the government. We encourage the Senate and the president to do theirs.

The Constitution gives the House control of spending. If the GOP can’t play a winning hand, the don’t deserve to be in power. They must learn how to play the game with finesse.
