China Discovers Cross-Border Tunnels Leading to Xinjiang, North Korea

Images from a Chinese satellite show cross-border tunnels in sensitive regions.

By Shannon Tiezzi

August 26, 2014

In April 2013, China launched Gaofen-1, its first high-definition earth observation satellite (Gaofen-2 was launched just last week, on August 19). This week, China’s National Space Administration reported that Gaofen-1 had captured images showing “dozens of cross-border tunnels” in northwest Xinjiang and along the China-North Korea border. It’s unclear exactly what the tunnels are used for, but Chinese media tied their existence to previous reports on illegal China-North Korea border crossings, as well as reports that Uyghur militant and terrorist groups often travel to foreign countries for training.

For China, the cross-border tunnels in Xinjiang are likely to be of more concern. The East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) and its offshoot, the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP), both have bases in the tribal regions of Pakistan.

There are people, Chinese and Norks, making lots of money through illegal cross-border trade.

Moslems expect that Mecca will be destroyed by Moslems in the Apocalypse which they are trying to bring about in Mesopotamia. Strict Moslem see even the Kaaba as an idol that is Pagan and should be destroyed. The Saudis, otherwise strict Moslems, keep the Kaaba because it is a tremendous source of income to Arabia. They have, however razed Mohammed's ancient home in Maka to build a hotel to also bring in money.

From North Korea no doubt. I’ve read some stories of people escaping and you're pretty much home free if you make it to China. From there you can fairly easily get to South Korea.

China often sends people back to NK

Not kidding

There are groups that hide and smuggle escapees from NK, they need to move them from China to a third country before they can be free enough to go to South Korea.

A frigid November day pressed against the windows of a shabby apartment building in the Chinese city of Yanji, ten miles from the North Korean border. Three stories up, footsteps stopped outside a door. At the sound, two young women hurried to a back room and shrank against a wall. Then came a knock. The women, defectors from North Korea, bowed their heads, expecting the worst. If the Chinese police found them without identity cards, they would be deported in handcuffs and chains. Back in North Korea, they would be sentenced to years of hard labor in a prison camp.

How does a satellite SEE tunnels? Do the Chinese have some kind df space-based ground-penetrating radar or some super Infrared cameras that can see the temperature difference from space?

While I could believe there are tunnels in both places, I’m not buying that the Chinese found them from space.

Synthetic aperture radar. The same technology has enabled U.S. archaeologists to find Egyptian pyramid-era structures hidden under dozens of meters of sand.
