EDINBURGH -- Campaigners for an independent Scotland are struggling to convince voters that their ancient nation will be better off if it leaves the U.K.
Undecided Scots like Calum Carruthers, a 36-year-old father of two from Dunblane, a cathedral town near Edinburgh, are weighing the potential benefits and risks of ending the country's longtime partnership with England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
"Emotionally, my instinct is it would be a good thing," said Mr. Carruthers, who works at a bank. But he added that the economic uncertainty is a huge concern, underscoring the dilemma many Scots are grappling with: "There's an awful lot of pros, but there is one big con staring right at me."
Ahead of a referendum Sept. 18 that could sound the final bell on the union, unionists and secessionists have been sparring over who can offer Scots the brightest economic future. And Brits will remove their fleet of nuclear subs?
It will get interesting
I doubt that it will happen.
My Guess is It won’t.
Too much money to lose from the Parliament in London.
As Rush Limbaugh used to say : YOU CAN’T FIGHT SANTA CLAUS.
won’t happen.
The military would be screwed up, welfare , and think of the Scottish officials serving in England, and will the Scots living in Britain now have to apply for visas?
Seems some are still fighting the war and playing on patriotism .
They are in a race to become the poorest nation in EUrope.
I hope so !
Does that imply that they are getting back more from London than London is taking from them?
The Scots have a very long, and proud, legacy as first line fighters in the UK’s many battles: the Scots Guard, the Black Watch, and so on. The Scots played a big role in defeating Napoleon at Waterloo, the Kaiser in WW1, Hitler, and in small skirmishes like the Falkland War.
As an observer from afar, as an American, it appears to me that the UK has always highly regarded the Scots contribution in their military. It surely would be a big loss for the British military to lose the Scots. Likewise, for the Scots to throw away such a long and proud legacy.
Whatever true Scots choose, good luck to them. The only prediction I can make is that I won’t be seeing Harry Potter translated into Scots anytime soon.
The political elite always want the status quo. I hope Scotland makes waves and votes independence, We have too much status quo.
The status quo of the UK works just fine for me. Im voting NO.
