Police in Texas have admitted they were wrong to draw their guns on a mother of four when they pulled over the family car early this month, but they won't apologize.
Kametra Barbour was told to exit her vehicle and she was handcuffed at gunpoint as her children watched from the backseat, dashcam footage shows.
The police only lowered their weapons after her six-year-old son got out of the car with his hands up, asking the officers, "Are we going to jail?"
A child is heard crying and screaming on the footage, as an officer tells her, "Stop crying. It's OK. It's OK. Everything's fine now."
ABC News reports the officers were responding after reports of four black men waving a gun out of a beige or tan-coloured Toyota. Barbour was driving a burgundy Nissan Maxima.
The police department defended the traffic stop as appropriate.
My BiL has a screen that he made from rope that he puts over the bed of his truck to keep his dogs from jumping out. He also has dog boxes but the dogs seem to prefer the rope screen during the daylight hours.
Can you point out where in the sun news story that they tell where this incident occurred. I must have missed it.
My dogs are small and inside dogs. The Texas heat would kill them before the cops could get their guns drawn. I do have them strapped into their raised, plush carriers.
There’s NO SUCH THING as a “reasonable” wrong assumption in law enforcement..... there are far too many bad things that can happen when an armed cop makes a little mistake.
Anyone who can support the actions of these officers are out of their minds. The officer who made the call to pull this car over should be fired because, at best, he is incompetent.
So its wrong for a cop to trust his gut and stop someone he thinks might be the person he is looking for??? Are you seriously making that argument?
I’m against the militarization of law enforcement and the shooting of dogs. But you guys are just too much.
There are plenty of women who look like men, especially at night.
Texas. sorry.
Beige is nowhere near burgundy.
Men and women are not the same and especially with young children. A trained LEO should be able to tell the difference.
....
LEO’s are trained, but witnesses are not. They have to take into account that the witness report can be mistaken.
3. Cops are breaking the law with impunity.
Some officers should pay out of pocket for this rank stupidity, maybe this would cause them to consider relearning some of the basics. How do so many officers screw up? I mean if one couldn’t get the make and color of the car right and tell the difference between a women and car load of small children from a car load of grown men that is one thing but a gaggle of cops all screwing up simultaneously!
Cops went home safe, mother and kids terrified and now probably will hate all police for the rest of their lives. Taxpayers on the hook for the settlement.
Mission accomplished!
LOL, you try to argue that stopping people at random is good police practice because eyewitness reports are useless. You seriously expect to catch bad guys this way? And your only retort to having your idiocy exposed is chickenshit insult. You will be ignored from now on.
Even the very worst case of colorblindness can tell light from dark. Tan is on the light spectrum. Burgundy is on the dark spectrum. A witness that cannot even tell if the car they saw was tan/light or burgundy/dark is not a reliable witness. This isn’t reaching deep; it is a simple fact.
...and they refuse to apologize!!!!
No offense DD, but if they assume the eyewitness report was wrong, then they can’t even know what to look for, so they should give up, right???
I mean, say the report is wrong...but still, why on earth would they assume a tan Toyota with 4 men should be compared with a burgundy Nissan with a woman and four little kids?!
Really? You heard that? Because the article said they wouldn’t apologize. I didn’t hear that.
‘Its bad when you have to be afraid of the thugs with badges. Im going to Victoria, Texas from Houston next week. I will take the cover off of my truck bed. I dont want the cops to have a reason to pull me over because I might be hiding something on the NAFTA drug running highway. And if I am pulled over I will immediately hold both hands out the window and tell my wife to do the same. Its sad that we have to live like this in America.’
Very eloquent, but as you said, also very sad. We live in strange, uncertain times. Obama sets the tone. As one police officer said not too long ago, ‘if Obama doesn’t obey the Constitution, why should I?’.
Well I guess if you’re in an all or nothing world.
I don’t fault them for the car color. They are close enough if you think the car color may have been wrong.
As I said originally I do fault them for not knowing there weren’t 4 adult males in the car. Even with tinted windows at night they should have been able to see there weren’t 4 guys in that car.
Doesn’t matter. Sorry don’t feed the bulldog. Budgets need cut.
/johnny
beige....burgundy. Almost as far apart as black and white. That’s ok if you don’t fault them for the car color. I do, enough for both of us.
