Texas cops defend pulling over mother of four at gunpoint

Police in Texas have admitted they were wrong to draw their guns on a mother of four when they pulled over the family car early this month, but they won't apologize.

Kametra Barbour was told to exit her vehicle and she was handcuffed at gunpoint as her children watched from the backseat, dashcam footage shows.

The police only lowered their weapons after her six-year-old son got out of the car with his hands up, asking the officers, "Are we going to jail?"

A child is heard crying and screaming on the footage, as an officer tells her, "Stop crying. It's OK. It's OK. Everything's fine now."

ABC News reports the officers were responding after reports of four black men waving a gun out of a beige or tan-coloured Toyota. Barbour was driving a burgundy Nissan Maxima.

The police department defended the traffic stop as appropriate.

If you’re going on the assumption that the eyewitness can’t tell tan from burgundy, then the report is worthless and shouldn’t be acted on at all.

good grief, you folks are idiots.

Not all cops are evil or incompetent. I openly criticized the cops for not being able to tell the difference between a car with 4 men and a car with 1 woman and kids but you’re still not happy.

Was the eyewitness diving for cover? Were they color blind?

"But, that’s the nature of their job."

No, that's not the nature of their job. It's the way they are interpreting their job - and seem to be having a swell power trip while doing it. There is no reason on this planet and under this Constitution that citizens - much less a well-dressed mother and her children - should be threatened with death just because some low-IQ clowns can't recognize the word "beige".

This incident was an abomination but more than common. Every single one of us faces exactly the same life-or-death scenario because of the policies and tactics of ensuring that cops never undergo any kind of risk but citizens can have loaded weapons pointed directly at them, fingers on the trigger at any time they feel like it. It's shameful and cowardly.

This poor lady and her family deserve a full hearing and if there's any money to be given, it should come directly from these cops' wallets.

Four kids who will hate cops for life. Nice job there, Quickdraw.

‘you folks are idiots.’

That is an idiotic statement.

Tan is not in the same ballpark as burgundy. Even a color blind person can tell light from dark. If the witness said ‘tan’ but meant ‘burgundy’, their report is worthless.

” Even a color blind person can tell light from dark.”

Wrong, depends on the person

Heck the cops couldn’t even tell there weren’t 4 men in the car and here you are arguing about the viability of a eyewitness describing the cars color correctly.

MESSAGE TO EVERYONE:
If stopped by a policeman--do not argue and do not do anything that he/she could interpret as threatening.

You can address grievances later.

The policeman is armed and probably frightened. Do not make him/her feel more threatened. To do so would be dangerous for you and him/her.

Do not have yourself a strut in the yard.

I was stopped for speeding. I didn't see the reduce-speed sign. The policeman was very nice and polite but firm, and I expected him to feel easily threatened. He told me to stay in the car. I did. He returned to his police car. When I found my auto registration, I held it out my window with a straight arm. He came to get it. I could see how anything that made him feel threatened could escalate into a dangerous situation. I am lily-white with a perfect record--no arrests--no nothing. If I were otherwise, I would be even more careful.

You know nothing about color blindness. Here’s a list of all the confusions. Tan-burgundy, or its equivalent, is not listed...for a reason:

In every one of these cases (pulling over obviously wrong car, no-knock warrants at wrong house, shooting the family pet, etc), the police force in question should apologize immediately and make some sort of restitution, particularly if loss of property or a pet is involved. It can only help their reputations and improve relations with the general public. It can probably save the taxpayers some money in the long run as well.

Municipalities always seem to play the "we're the governement; deal with it!" card rather than admit and rectify their own mistakes.

What is the innocent person supposed to do? She hadn’t done anything. She had no idea why she was being stopped. What if she had gone in her handbag for a cell phone?
There would be some motherless kids, ruined for life, never being able to figure out why their mother was murdered.

When the cop thinks you’re the perp, he can only look at you as the perp. You are the a$$hole. You are the filthy bastard who he can’t let get away.

Even if you aren’t.

You know you didn’t do anything wrong, so you have nothing to worry about, right? But what you don’t know is that the cop thinks you are the perp and will put holes in you if you appear to threaten him.

Even if you are no threat.

Yes, and in 10 years they will be shooting these kids and bemoaning the fact that young blacks hate the police, unless, of course, Obama/Holder manage to change the rules so that the police can almost never shoot black youths unless they or black or no white thugs are available.

>>If they don’t they could end up dead as one does every 60 hours.<<

Do you have the number of cops killed while on duty per month/year and the number of suicides per month/year?

Some people will defend cops no matter what. These jackboots see a black woman driving a burgundy car and pull her over, draw down on her, handcuff her when none of the descriptions by the eyewitnesses came close. Plus, surely they recognized she was a “she” when she got out of the car. But they still handcuffed her because she might have been a man dressed as a woman? Yet, some still defend the cops.

It’s bad when you have to be afraid of the thugs with badges. I’m going to Victoria, Texas from Houston next week. I will take the cover off of my truck bed. I don’t want the cops to have a reason to pull me over because I “might” be hiding something on the NAFTA drug running highway. And if I am pulled over I will immediately hold both hands out the window and tell my wife to do the same. It’s sad that we have to live like this in America.

Rent a beige Toyota, play rap music, wave a watergun out the window and see what happens.

Get your insurance and registration out of the glove box and tuck in into the visor. That saves a nervous moment because you don’t have to open the glove box while the cop tries to verify there’s a gun in there.

Please. After the kids came over, the cops assured the kids and tried to calm them.....there is no evidence of ill will on the cops’ part.

The car did NOT match the description BUT the 9-1-1 caller also said the vehicle was seen getting off the same exit as the woman.

Shouldn’t law enforcement err on the side of caution? I think so.

I keep the insurance card and registration in the visor.

Lots of times we travel with our dogs and we’re on edge the entire trip. I’m afraid of what I would do if my dogs got shot by retarded chickenshit cops. Most of them should not be allowed to carry guns.

“Earlier this morning the FBI released their 2010 report on police officers who were attacked or killed “in the line of duty.” According to their statistics, 56 officers were killed (8 more than 2009) in line-of-duty (LOD) deaths, and 98% were killed using firearms. Considering that there are currently about 683,000 active police officers in the country that’s almost double the national homicide rate,..........”

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2011/10/foghorn/fbi-more-cops-killed-in-2010-98-by-firearms/

That amounts to a cop killed every 156 hours, not 60 hours as per Cen-Tejas
