Michael Brown death illustrates need to rescue urban youth
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | August 15, 2014 | Jewelle Taylor Gibbs

One of the major factors contributing to the stressful environment for young black males (and other minority youth) continues to be the persistent pattern of police harassment, misconduct and brutality toward these youth. As Michelle Alexander has noted in her recent book, "The New Jim Crow," the United States has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world; this seems to be a deliberate strategy to deal with black males who are frequently viewed as a threat to the social order.

I suspect the percentage of blacks that have ever read Booker T. Washington’s “Up From Slavery” (and those are the ones who CAN read), is 0.000001%.

Pretty much the same thing as the crack baby scare, from what I know-from the stuff I’ve read and seen, a glass of wine now and then by a pregnant woman isn’t going to create a mentally disabled baby-but doing any kind of bingeing is harmful-pregnant or not. All things in moderation is the truth...

Given the current trend of being terrified of everything nanny government says “no” about, in a year or two we will be putting all pregnant women in lockdown and feeding them Michelle Obama’s school lunches and water until they give birth...

I left case management over years ago to pursue my own thing in construction, and because I was totally sick of the whining many clients did. I monitor safety and teach proper body mechanics on jobs for the contractor I work for-yes, I get paid when I do that-so still have a keen interest in rehab and safety.

Replace the incentives in the culture that once caused most black fathers to live with and raise their children with the woman that birthed those children. There is no better rescue plan.

The time for that has long passed. All one can do now is attempt to control or modulate it until a radical transition enables a total reset of morals, education, and government in this country.

Some years ago, some young male elephants were removed from their families and “raised” in another area, without any adult male elephants. The result: When the young elephants reached puberty they began killing other animals, just for the fun of it. We’re seeing the same thing happening where the fathers are not part of the young males growing up.

I’ll use another elephant analogy.

Every know why adult circus animals are tied to a stake and don’t escape even though they easily could break away.

It’s because as babies they were tied to the stake, and tried to break away but couldn’t. So, they eventually just gave up trying.

I wonder what his SAT scores are compared to Zer0s?

I’ve seen a couple of programs on H2 and natgeo on that subject-fascinating.

The young elephants had no role models, as would have happened in a natural environment, not contrived/engineered. The uncontrolled behavior of the adolescents resulted from interference with the natural cycle of bringing up the young ones. It is certainly worth making the comparison to humans-children looking to other clueless kids for behavioral cues because their fathers have been deemed unnecessary and wandered off, and the whole thing devolves into chaos...

Longer terms --> higher incarceration rates --> lower crime rates.

If you don't have the time......

Don’t forget they were also likely fed while tied to a stake.

Since I was a kid, ranchers have been trapping feral hogs and adding them to their tame hogs for breeding and providing lean pork-as long as they can keep their snout in the trough, they won’t stray.

There’s not a racial reason for things the ‘bell curve’ points out, its circumstance.

"The Bell Curve" points out that cognitive skills is a combination of heredity and environment. Having said that the authors took great pains to point out that that fact says nothing about an individual.

One of the problems is that if you pin point heredity, then you open up the argument that it was white slave owners who bred the lower bell curve into them. I dont’ think we ought to engage in that type of argument, rather stick to the argument that “The Great Society” program has not only failed them, but is leading them down an evolutionary dead end.

They’ve used a variety of what are called IQ tests, both individually administered and pencil and paper tests. There is no question, the inner city kids and those without an intact family don’t get the exposure to language from an early age.

Researchers have actually tape recorded verbal interaction in homes and looked at the number of different words the kids are exposed to on average in a day. In some families children are exposed to hundreds of different words. In other famiies there is very little verbal interaction. The children with the rich verbal environment do much better on IQ tests. On average. Programs like Headstart can’t seem to make up for the lack of parental verbal interaction.

It makes sense. If a child is not exposed to words, or if they’re not exposed to concepts like less/more, over/under, good/bad, big/small, sweet/sour - they’re not going to do well in school when other children are being taught letters and numbers at the age of two or younger.

No one is pin pointing hereditary, and no sensible person makes the argument the slave owners bred the lower bell curve.

The reality is that in ethnicity plays a role in cognitive skills, at least skills that matter in Western civilization. Environment play a major role as well.

I dont’ think we ought to engage in that type of argument,

Neither do I

The children with the rich verbal environment do much better on IQ tests.

My original comment, regarding how to save these children, was to have them adopted as infants, by Christian home-schoolers.

I also said I don't buy the conclusion that blacks are less intelligent, and that the underlying difference was cultural.

Reflecting on what you just stated...I don't think I was wrong.

You mean, have the women become charming, friendly and stay thin?

Let me fix this sentence: One of the major factors contributing to the stressful environment for young black males (and other minority youth) continues to be the persistent pattern of police harassment, misconduct and brutality toward by these youth.

The horrendous crime rate by young black males in and out of school (see Trayvon Martin) is the root cause of their problems. Give up the criminality and become productive citizens and voila, you problems "caused" by racism will disappear.
