Guns & Suicide: The Hidden Toll

Though guns are not the most common method by which people attempt suicide, they are the most lethal. About 85 percent of suicide attempts with a firearm end in death. (Drug overdose, the most widely used method in suicide attempts, is fatal in less than 3 percent of cases.) Moreover, guns are an irreversible solution to what is often a passing crisis. Suicidal individuals who take pills or inhale car exhaust or use razors have time to reconsider their actions or summon help. With a firearm, once the trigger is pulled, there’s no turning back.

LOL, God forbid anyone actually discuss this rationally and intelligently.

It amazes and disturbs me to observe the way liberals discuss issues.

Heh...we are so enchanted!

Suicide deaths by guns should be 100% successful. I’d recommend training prior to suicide

With a firearm, once the trigger is pulled, there’s no turning back.

They have some deep thinkers at Harvard Yard, no doubt about it. Yes, if you're determined to kill yourself a firearm is a reliable way to do it. If not, then a few wrist slashes the wrong way with a razor blade is a safe cry for help. The tools are not the issue, the intention is.

About 40 years ago some eastern city passed a waiting period to buy a handgun. They said this was to discourage suicides.

During that time, several people tried to buy guns to kill themselves. When they found they had to wait a week or so each one went out and found another way to kill themselves.

The police Chief was so proud as the gun law prevented those people from killing themselves with firearms, even though they were still dead.

The Harvard School of Public Health has been little more than a tool of the gun-ban movement for decades.

someone’s suicide by gun does not trump my God given right to protect myself and my family with a firearm.

Higher rates of successful suicide attempts are no reason to ban guns. The right to keep and bear arms is a natural right. However, if your friend or spouse is clinically depressed and/or suicidal it makes good sense to limit easy access to firearms. Removing the firing pins works well.

I have lost 2 friends in my life to suicide by gun. One was only 14 years old. The other was 43. One other is alive today because his wife was concerned about his depression and talk of how his family would be better off without him. At her request I removed the firing pin from his handgun. After a failed suicide attempt scared some sense into him he sought treatment and has now recovered from his depression.

Wonder do the stats include: assisted suecide like Dr. Kevork or like footsoldering on the race track or like walking into a fist ? Choices carry consequences and consequences hold choices.

GunFacts.info

Fact: Worldwide, the per capita suicide rate is fairly static (the suicide rate of the U.S. is lower than many industrial countries, including many where private gun ownership is banned). A certain fraction of the population will commit suicide regardless of the available tools.

Fact: In Japan, the murder rate is almost 1 per 100,000. In the U.S., there are about 3.2 murders per 100,000 people each year by weapons other than firearms. This means that even if firearms in the U.S. could be eliminated, we would still have three times the murder rate of the Japanese. Japan’s murder rate may be low, but its suicide rate is over 20 per 100,000 people. Japanese are being murdered and committing suicide at a rate of about 21 per 100,000. In the U.S., our combined murder and suicide rate is about 21 also.

Fact: Though the number of firearms owned by private citizens has been increasing steadily since 1970, the overall rate of homicides and suicides has not risen.

Fact: For every accidental death, suicide, or homicide with a firearm, 10 lives are saved through defensive use.

Interestingly I could not find any UK statistics for firearm deaths murders. This begs the same analysis for blaming guns except they are hiding the numbers?

Britain has a low homicide rate, but it has the highest violent crime rate in the EU, a violent crime rate that is higher than South African, and much higher than the United States. The only first-world nation with a higher violent crime rate than Britain is Australia, a nation that also banned and confiscated firearms, stripping its people of their ability to defend themselves from violent criminals.

But for people who only care about body counts, all the muggings, rapes, home-invasions and carjackings that happen to deliberately defenseless citizens is of no consequence.

I would say that ALL men have an inner 14 year old.

The trick is to not let that 14 year old call the shots.
