As Illinois became the last state to allow concealed guns in public, state officials wrote a host of rules designed to prevent irresponsible uses of force that could take innocent lives.
But multiple instructors authorized to teach people how to tote guns under the new state program are police officers with documented histories of making questionable decisions about when to use force, a Tribune review has found.
One instructor is an officer whom two suburbs sought to fire because of substantiated excessive force allegations, municipal records show. Another was accused by two ex-wives of physical abuse and by one of repeatedly threatening to kill her and resigned when his chief tried to fire him after a corroborated accusation that he hit a teen with a flashlight without cause, according to records.
A third officer was responsible for a use of force that was ruled justified but remains controversial the fatal point-blank shooting of a motorist who struggled with police, which led to a lawsuit that was settled for $1.75 million.

Houston has a mandatory “safe tow” program where you MUST allow a city sponsored tow truck operator to move your car off the highway if you have a problem.
Plenty of criminals with physical assault records are in that program as drivers. There were no background checks. “GET IN THE TRUCK!”
That’s if we want to talk about violent thugs who could be a potential threat to citizens...
You see it in the "message" they put out all over: Don't own a gun, you're more likely to hurt yourself than a criminal. Don't fight back. Don't shoot anyone, don't ever draw your gun, you'll automatically get arrested and probably sued. Don't carry in public, it isn't safe. Don't trust xyz it is a flawed dangerous gun. Now they are working on don't trust your instructors, they are bad people.
The strategy here appears to be chip away at gun ownership from every angle. Introduce fears and doubts and push them to irrational levels. Try to make the perceived risks associated firearms exceed the perceived rewards.
Many leftist reporters have checkered pasts....
Compare Illinois with Arizona. Arizona requires no training, no licensing, no nothing, if you can legally own a gun. This means the entire requirement for training is just an expensive waste of time.
If people want training on their own dime, there is an abundance of trainers out there. And there are a *lot* of people who get training, and not just the “minimum training”, but good quality training, because they *want* good training.
The vast majority don’t, however, and rarely have any problems because of the lack of training.
When I was younger my husband used to accuse me of emotional abuse every month and hid all the guns in the house.
Accused of crimes, and performing actions that are justified but controversial?
Death penalty. No trial needed.
Freakin' Chicago Tribune, making it up as they go along. Accusations are now convictions.
The press. They are first.
--I think that's true everywhere--the people usually getting concealed weapons permits in the past have usually had some experience with firearms and carrying of them--
--presently, with more women getting permits, the only concern I would have would be from some of the dimwits out there ( some clerks in gunshops come to mind) giving bad advice to new purchasers---
AZ has “Constitutional” carry no permission slip from the government required.
Mayor Ralm “Bathhouse” Emmanuel has a “checkered” past.
Hope you don't mind the "upgrade"... '-)
If they had felonious pasts they’d already be Chicago aldermen.
