A gunman wearing an Afghan army uniform opened fire at an officers school near Kabul Tuesday, killing a two-star US major general the highest-ranking officer to be killed in the 13-year-old war in Afghanistan.
Brandishing a light machine gun, the terrorist also wounded up to a dozen other Americans, three Afghan army officers and a German brigadier general who suffered a non-life threatening injury, authorities said Tuesday.
The US general the first to die in the line of duty since 9/11 and first in overseas combat since Vietnam was identified as Maj. Gen. Harold Greene, the Associated Press reported.

I hope this doesn’t interfere with the President’s fundraising agenda. [/sarc]
RIP, Sir.
But, but.. I thought Obama was to end all these wars and close Gitmo.
575 US troops died in Afghanistan during the Bush presidency. By August 18, 2010, following two troop surges initiated by President Obama, that number had doubled. Today, over 1500 US troops have died in Afghanistan since President Obama took officeand yet, little in that war-torn country has changed.
These numbers should give us pause. While the Administration has publicly conceded that there is no military solution in Afghanistan, and claimed that it supports ‘Afghan-led reconciliation’, its policy on the ground is marked by a refusal to establish a timetable for full military withdrawal even after misleading Americans into thinking that all US troops would be out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
We must ask ourselves how many more lives will be sacrificed before the Obama administration sets a clear end date for America’s longest war.
Obama stinks on ice and the MSM are complicit in not reporting the death toll.
I wonder if Obama will attend the funeral or go to another fudgepacking “golf” outing instead.
“... the first US general to die in the line of duty since 9/11 ...”

OK, I am old and forgetful.
Which US General died in the line of duty on 9/11?
Prayers for the soul of Gen. Greene, workplace violence has become all too common these days.
Prolly one at the pentagon.
LTG Maude. He was the Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel assigned at the Pentagon.
Thank you.
we didn't HAVE TO attack Afghanistan/Iraq....IF we had no need for Mid East oil...IF we had our coal industry cranked up, our natural gas industry cranked up and if we allowed oil exploration in the Artic and off shore...
but no....we have to have that stinking moral naievity or more likely, that stinking underhanded crooked deal making that keeps America paying and America losing...
They got a real big fish this time
probably a lot of celebrating and ululating
The idea that number of Americans killed is a metric of our investment ("and yet little has changed") is a Vietnam era invention that needs to go.
If the number of Afghans killed was rising fast, that would be good. This "proving how committed we are" by sending underarmed and undermanned formations out among savages is ridiculous - and it wasn't invented by Obama.
I’d bet it’ll be the latter.
RIP Gen. Greene.
As in Vietnam the real problem is the ROE.
Obie has these guys hands tied.
Or his vacation.
We had Iraq all sewed up till Obie gave it all away.
I never thought we could tame or civilize Afghanistan, but we were right to pound the taliban and al Queda loose.
At least it ain’t just the grunts dying.
But Bush and Petraeus tied them first.
Look, Obama is a disaster on all fronts. But none of the disgraceful ROE or supply problems are original to him.
Here's how to win:
