The Department of Defense informed Congress that it has deployed biological diagnostics systems to National Guard support teams in all 50 states, according to a report published by the Committee on Armed Services. The report, published in April amid growing fears that the Ebola hemorrhagic fever virus might spread outside of West Africa, says that the portable systems are designed for “low probability, high consequence” scenarios.

Some 340 Joint Biological Agent Identification and Diagnostic System (JBAIDS) units have thus far been given to emergency response personnel. The systems are “rapid, reliable, and [provide] simultaneous identification of specific biological agents and pathogens,” says executive officer for the DOD’s Chemical and Biological Defense group Carmen J. Spencer.

The Chemical and Biological Defense Program has sharpened the DoD diagnostics portfolio by increasing the capability of our fielded system, some 340 of which have been provided to the Military Services.

The Joint Biological Agent Identification and Diagnostic System is a portable system capable of rapid, reliable, and simultaneous identification of specific biological agents and pathogens. By partnering with the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and the Food and Drug Administration, we have made accessible additional diagnostic assays for high consequence, low probability biological threat agents for use during declared public health emergencies.

This collaboration has facilitated the availability of viral hemorrhagic fever diagnostic assays for use during a declared emergency and adds previously unavailable preparedness capabilities to this fielded system.

Public transportation in a civilized nation, doesn’t seem to be much of an issue.

“Ebola is relatively hard to catch compared to some other viruses like measles, SARS, or the flu. It’s not spreadable through the air, so someone won’t get it from someone else coughing or sneezing.

In order to contract Ebola, someone must touch the blood or bodily fluids (including sweat, urine, and semen) of a person or animal who’s infected (alive or dead). People can also catch it through indirect contact with victims’ fluids, such as via bedding or medical equipment.

People generally aren’t infectious until they get sick.

Ebola’s limited transmission ability is one of the main reasons why outbreaks can often be stopped within weeks or months. What it takes is public education and good health-care hygiene like isolating patients, sterilization procedures, and the use of gloves, masks, and other protective gear.”

You just proved my point.

If that dude who sat in your subway seat and got off at the previous stop sneezed and wiped it on the seat, you sit down, touch the seat and then scratch your eye. Guess whut...

But you have to admit it’s scary— the biggest outbreak ever. A doctor and missionary from the US working for Samaritans Purse just caught it. You’d think they’d know the precautions. Another doctor has died. Can this virus mutate quickly? (Obviously I have no idea, but then again, until it does, does the medical community know?)

“And tonight a desperate race was on to find dozens of passengers who flew on the same jets as the 40-year-old American.”

“Mr Sawyer was allowed to board an ASKY Airlines flight in Liberia, where Ebola is rife, despite vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea. His sister was recently killed by the virus.”

Can’t expect airliners to lose some profit by turning away a paying customer. As for the dozens of other passengers, well, it’s a bit too late. Who knows where they scattered off to, and if they were infected, they’ve probably already infected others.

Assuming he was already sick with it that scenario is possible, but less likely to be happening if we were dealing with an outbreak and public awareness, and especially of spotting people who were sick with it, meaning they were infectious, it has been around for 40 years, and has always been very limited, and that is in Africa no less.

Different things and different scenarios have more emotional appeal or impact on different people, this one doesn’t bother me very much.

It is like dirty bombs, that threat doesn’t bother me much, but I know that the media will go crazy over them, I wouldn’t want to see a disease kill a few thousand people and cause more social disruption, but this doesn’t seem to be end of the world stuff to me.

“Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhoea, fever, weakness, headache and sore throat.”

If you exhibit symptoms of ebola, you are supposed to go to the doctor and be tested for it. We’re already talking about millions and millions of people.

Ya know, for an administration that was quick to shut
down national parks etc. You’d think they could post
phone this African summit thing for thirty days or so.
Another bad decision on the part of the Worst President’s
worst administration EVER.

That it’s not presently spread as easily as the flu or common cold is a good thing. Let’s just hope it stays that way!

Small comfort, because the virus seems to be evolving rapidly and able to spread more easily and quickly.

From your article:

“And if a case did appear in the USA, it “would not pose a major public health risk” Michael Osterholm, biosecurity expert and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota told USA Today. Why? Because it would be quickly tracked down and controlled.”

Do you realize that tons of kids still go to school with flu-like symptoms? And what about someone here visiting from another country - either trying to “tough out” their visit, or here illegally and afraid of going to the doctor.

I wonder if this “quickly tracked down and controlled” will use the same methods for catching illegal aliens and sending them back.

Interesting. I don’t know if it makes me feel better or worse, although I’m with you that I don’t think it’s the end of the world, still...

There is no problem with getting into it some, that is part of the fun of being a prepper, personally I like EMPs better as a topic.

Also by Richard Preston,”The Cobra Event”, for those of us who often wonder about the weaponized variety of viral agents, their creators and motivations. Very scary, very real.

Then why are western trained medical people catching it? Apparently it can survive for days at room temp.

It was limited in Africa because it was in areas where it killed faster then people could walk out. It’s in major cities with airports this time.
