Rob Portman's Field of Dreams
National Review (Corner) ^ | 7/23/14 | Henry Olsen

Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal op-ed by a potential GOP presidential candidate, Ohio senator Rob Portman, brings to mind a quote from the movie Field of Dreams. At the end of the movie, Ray Kinsella angrily confronts the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson when the player refuses to let Ray come with him. “What’s in it for me?” Kinsella cries. I fear that will be the reaction among working-class whites in Ohio and other industrial Midwest states if the agenda the senator lays out is all that’s on offer in 2016.

According to exit polls, whites without a college degree easily remain the largest single voting bloc in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Unlike their Southern brethren, these voters gave President Obama significant support, between 42 and 50 percent, in 2012. If these blue-collar white voters had just given the president the same share as their neighbors in Indiana (37 percent), Mitt Romney would have carried all three states.

***

It thus would be quite easy to portray someone running on this agenda and no more as a person out of touch who doesn’t care about people like them. That perception was what killed Governor Romney: He lost nationally by 63 points among the 21 percent of Americans who thought caring about people like them was the most important presidential characteristic. In Ohio the margin was even worse: Romney lost by 69 points among the 22 percent who valued caring above all else.

I am pleased to see somebody at National Review taking issue with the prospective candidacy of Rob "Gay Marriage" Portman, even if his argument leans heavily to the "caring" issue. But I'll bet not everybody at the Corner agrees, given their fondness for so-called marriage equality, and I suspect Portman may be just the candidate the GOP-E will foist on us next round.

I agree. Even most Ohioans have never heard of Portman probably including many who voted for him. He creates no news and gets no coverage.

Honestly the only establishment candidate I’d even consider voting for is Newt Gingrich. Yeah he has a flaky wife and is a bit off on a couple of issues but I could support him. He speaks plainly, says what he means and is willing to change his position in a principled way as he understands an issue better. The thing that concerns me about him is that his reputation has been so destroyed by the left that I don’t think he would be able to win a general election.

Rob (Natalie)Portman, Rand (Mrs Fish-stick)Paul, Jeb (Clampit) Bush, Marco (Rubs me the wrong way)Rubio, et al will not beat a demonrat because they can’t energize the base enough and are too afraid to challenge the demonrat rhetoric even when it is demonstratively false and easily disproved.

The problem other huge problem all the establishment candidates have is called Ted Cruise.

I think the next President of the US is going to be Ted Cruz. I understand the eligibility issues but frankly I don’t care. The demonrats have poisoned that well let them see how it feels. I can guarantee that if you want the eligibility issue clarified then let the Republicans put forward a candidate with the same background issues as the Obamanation of Desolation. They can’t say a word about it without incriminating themselves.

Ted Cruz may need to pick an establishment VP like Regan taking GHW Bush in 1980 to mollify the East Coast effete, blue blood, neo-leftist moderates and win the election but he will win the nomination hands down if he runs.

At least that is my opinion

I think only Sarah Palin is the only candidate that can connect with working-class and blue-collar white voters.
