Summit 2016 and the Young Conservative Leadership Summit. I was especially encouraged by the impressive turnout 3,500 Saturday night for what has become the CPAC of the Summer in the Rockies,
and by the quality of the 120 16-20 year olds I spent teaching for the entire week prior. Next year I expect the numbers for both WCS and YCLS to double and more, and for the WCS 15 to actually explode in attendance as every major would-be president figures out what Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Bobby Jindal and Sarah Palin figured out this year: If you want to be in the mix for 2016 and among conservative leadership, you have to attend and speak to thousands of activists assembled. As part of the #YCLS I ran four mock Iowa caucuses of approximately 30 students each time. Cruz won a narrow majority of the young folks after they all argued and debated each other for an hour each time, but with respectable showings for Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum, and Scott Walker.
Seems the young folk liked the Cruz filibuster a lot. Of course it is very early, but like other straws in the wind, this Cruz-centric crowd left an impression because these folks committed a week of their summer (sure there was white-water rafting and afternoons off) to politics and Con Law for smart young people.
Early indicators are encouraging for the Texas senator who keynoted the big Summit on Saturday night and brought the crowd to its feet. (As did Jindal the night before, and my students found me on Saturday to talk about just how impressed they had been with Jindal who had not a single supporter in all the mock caucuses. That is what campaigning does.)

Reagan had a similar following in 1976 Cruz could go all the way??
I’ll vote for Cruz, but if he gets dropped off, I’m out. I’ll be part of the millions of disillusioned conservatives those GOPe b@stards are counting on to hold their now. Never again. Count on it.
Even Breitbart ran a really nasty piece yesterday about Ted joining Beck at the border. I think they know that if Ted gets any traction, he might win the nomination in a walk. It seems to me that Breitbart is running interference for Rand Paul, who doesn’t even believe in voter ID! Too upsetting to low-information minorities, and those who want to steal elections, I suppose. Bob
If they run Romney they’re finished
I stand with Ted
I’m sill a Sarah Palin fan the only one I trust I would love to see a Palin vs Clinton I could vote for Cruz I also like Scott Walker he has walked the walk..
Why all of the speculation on MR?
I have heard him state repeatedly he is not running.
I want Ted, but will settle for Marco. Winning at any cost needs to be the goal, not filling out a wish list @ 100%.
I agree. Except for Ron Paul and Romney. I like Scott Walker the best and Ted Cruz along with Mike Lee.
Hugh stuck on Romney?
Will vote for any “R” they (or the MSM) put up—I will never sit on my hands again. Look where that got us? Obama’s second term. Anybody think Obama is better than Mittens? Would Hillary be better than Mittens or Jeb Bush? Nope! Vote “R” this time and hope for the best. Walker would be good for me—Ted Cruz would be great too.
I live in a country (the UK) where the conservative choice supports gay marriage, socialised healthcare and the right of unions to make domestic labour almost prohibitively costly to employers. I emphasize that this is the conservative candidate (David Cameron.)
Romney might seem like a decent option when compared with Obama, but my country ... is a prime example of what happens when you compromise your principles and start rationalising voting for the lesser of two evils.
Those words are as true today as they were two years ago, and will be as true two years from now.
I don't know how long you've been voting, Light Brigade, but I've been voting ... for any R they (or the MSM) put upI will never sit on my hands again. .... Vote R this time and hope for the best for decades! I've DONE that, lots of Americans have BEEN there, DONE THAT, and for increasingly leftist Republicans as time has gone on. We've done it your way, and it has failed miserably! Wake up!
I am a Palin fan as well but I think the Governor won’t run again. She likes the position she has right now.
I had a dream the other night that Romney was elected President, I guess in 2016.
Did not know that Mitt had the psychic powers to transmit his dreams into other people’s heads. Creepy.
What a horrible nightmare.
I had a dream 20 years ago about Bob Dole taking the oath in 1996, and he would’ve stopped 9/11 by capturing Obama Bin Laden. Oops, Osama. Whatever.
