Egyptian media applauds Israel’s Gaza offensive

Since the beginning of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, much of the Egyptian media has laid the blame squarely on the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the tiny Palestinian enclave.

Some journalists have even said that all Palestinians are to blame for their current plight.

Israel’s escalating attack on the Gaza Strip has triggered worldwide debate. Egypt is no exception.

But there is little of the traditional Arab solidarity towards Palestinians to be found in the Egyptian media.

Adel Nehaman, a columnist for the Egyptian daily El-Watan, said bluntly: "Sorry Gazans, I cannot support you until you rid yourselves of Hamas."(continued)

Egypt sees Hamas as a direct threat to themselves. So, I think do a lot of other countries in the region. They will hold their tongue until after the threat is properly disposed of.

Reporter's comment: "this family has no connection to Hamas".

Um, sure. And the hundreds of thousands of German civilians killed by allied bombs in WWII had "no connection" to Hitler or the Nazis. Right? They only ELECTED and SUPPORTED them.

“They see the neutralisation of Hamas as crucial to winning Egypt’s undeclared war in the Sinai Peninsula.”

The article mentions nearly daily attacks on the Egyptian military in the bordering Sinai over the last 12 months. This operation is not occurring in a vacuum - Egypt has been conducting deliberate war campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood (which Hamas is). They are in it to win it. It is not just some general policy preference, it is now an “us or them” fight to the death between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian Military.

Regime change in Gaza has to be an Egyptian objective. It seems the plan is to put Fatah back in charge in Gaza, but Hamas has to weakened enough for them to take over. That will require a serious ass-kicking, because they have 100,000 well-armed fighters. Most will flip sides to the highest bidder when the winds change, but the organization must be broken to make that happen - funding must be cut off, heavy weaponry and ammo stockpiles eliminated, public support diminished and leadership ranks thinned. In fact, in Egypt the military at home has placed a particular emphasis on rolling up the whole chain of command and sentencing them to death.

So I expect more than just a few collapsed tunnels out of this operation. I expect to see Fatah back in Gaza under arms. And sooner or later, an Egyptian-backed Night of Long Knives will descend on the Muslim Brothers.

It may take 150 years or even 1000, but sometimes, the truth surfaces in Egypt and the Arab Muslim world in general...

Ping. Might be of interest. I’m skeptical and don’t know much about it one way or the other.

Hitler was never elected by a majority of the German electorate, he got about 44% of the vote, which, ironically, was about the same proportion of the vote that Hamas got in the 2006 election.

Egyptians are sick and tired of taking it on the chin for the Palestinians. Islamism had ruined their economy, culture and freedoms. Egypt seems to drifting back into the orbit of the west.

“Egypt seems to drifting back into the orbit of the west.”

Egypt will swing back fully to the West after Obama is no longer in office. The current Egyptian leadership can trust Obama no further than they can throw him. Obama is an Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood lover, and they know it.

That presumes Egypt left.

It did not. The forces that regained control were always there but temporarily out of power.

The issue isn't whether we provide Hamas weapons, we don't. We send money. However there is no question Hamas has American weapons. We supply the PA, aka Fatah and the al Aska Martyrs Brigade, weapons and training. After taking over Gaza, Hamas openly bragged about the weapons and equipment they acquired. Additionally weaponry could easily have been transported from Libya. But more likely Iran who supplies them directly.

The Muslim Brohood/Jarrett lead administration will do all it can to prevent the downfall of the hood. How did they lose in Egypt? Didn’t Jarrett just send Hamas tons of weapons and money?
