A bit off topic; but a threatened strike against Red England food chain ‘Market Basket’ emptied the shelves in a matter of HOURS at many locations over the weekend...produce was impossible to find, except at competitors like Shaw’s and Hannaford’s. Taken in tandem with this; it shows how FRAGILE the food supply actually is...got garden? You’ll wish you did.

Better that than Big Government being in charge of the food.

This article is neglecting the role of government in this..

How many U.S. citizens grew much of their food just 80 years ago?
Why don’t we do that now? Government intrusions/regulations egged on by these corporations???

And the way that we are going to get these big corporations to change is by voting with our wallets.

He didn't propose how we do that when these corporations control almost 100% of what we need every week. I already buy store brands when I can and I don't see anyone breaking up their monopolies because of it.

The meat for the burger I had for lunch was once Bambi's mom. The hamburger bun, I baked myself.

I prefer to raise and make and harvest a large percentage of what I eat.

The spaghetti sauce for tomorrow's supper came 100% out of my garden, Bambi's mom provided the meat.

I have moral objections to 5 of these companies. If I look deeper, I’d probably have problems with them all.

“So the American people end up eating billions of pounds of extremely unhealthy food that is loaded with chemicals and additives each year, and we just keep getting sicker and sicker as a society. “

So the life expectancy is plummeting?

Unlike many other Freepers, I think this is obscene. And it is affecting our health.

Yesterday, I was in Safeway, where I ordinarily buy only produce, mostly organic, looking for a can of something other than cat food that my cat would enjoy. Read labels on all canned fish. Amazing how much sodium is added to everything. Finally found a can of sardines with “no salt added.” Cat and I both enjoyed them.

I try to stay salt-free , so I don’t have to take blood pressure meds. It works. Every prepared food in the market would kill me sooner rather than later. Or create health problems that would require pharmaceuticals, which I also avoid whenever possible.

Were I a conspiracy theorist, I would suspect collusion between food manufactures and BigPharma.

And many of these giant corporations (such as Monsanto) are extremely ruthless. Small farmers all over America are being wiped out and forced out of the business by the predatory business practices of these huge companies...

Talk to any farmer.............his biggest problem is with BIG GOVERNMENT, not big corporations.

The author didn't even mention Big Government, did he?

Makes me think he's in their pocket.

Come the revolution and the blockage of the interstates, the riots will be over no food until starvation makes the rioters too weak to function.

The US eats crap today.

Over 90% of our seafood is imported.

Our quality domestic food, like salmon is exported to Japan, because they pay top dollar.

Foreign countries use various factory methods of fish farming that is disgusting.

US companies don't like country of origin labeling because 'we' like to know where our food comes from.

It’s not a matter of whether or not you think the food is healthy. Some care about that, but the most danger is having all you eggs in a few baskets.

If any one of these huge conglomerates fail, we’ll have problems with our food supply. Along with small dispersed government we need to think about smaller more diversified everything, especially food production

This person doesn’t seem to realize that the food industry is less competitive than it should be BECAUSE of the government controls.
