How To Run Against ObamaCare. Draw attention to the ACA's pernicious effects on ordinary Americans.
WSJ/Rove ^ | July 17, 2014 | Karl Rove

But GOP candidates can't simply rely on attacking Democrats for having voted for ObamaCare or, in the case of nonincumbents, supporting it. They should draw attention to the law's pernicious effects on ordinary Americans.

By humanizing ObamaCare's shortfalls through stories from ordinary people, Republicans will help explode the myth of liberal competence and compassion, keep this issue fresh through the fall and cause voters to hold Democrats accountable at the polls.

I agree -- you need to discuss Obamacare with specifics, not just generalities -- many people still don't know the real impact it has and will have on them personally. (At the WSJ link only the first paragraph is visible, but Rove post it on his own site as well)

“”Instead of leaving it to insurers and hospice providers to identify the drugs they are responsible for, the new rule sets up a process that requires Part D plans to reject initially any prescription from a hospice patient. The patient or doctor, with the hospice provider’s agreement, must explain to the insurer why the drug is not related to end-of-life care. The insurer may deny coverage for a number of reasons, including if the doctor or hospice did not explain sufficiently why the drug was unrelated to the terminal illness, Medicare officials told hospice organizations and insurers” “

How to run against it, but not actually do anything to stop it.

Well, they BETTER stop it — now, before it will totally take us over and it will be much harder to repeal.

What I don’t agree with. and unfortunately Republicans are getting conned into this, is the notion that you have to have something to replace it with, prior to repealing it.

We had a medical system prior to that — let’s just repeal Obamacare, THEN we can institute small, thoughtful steps to help medical care in this country.

It's NOT the ACA. It's the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - the
PP Act better known as the Pee Pee Act.

I would certainly take Karl Rove’s advice on election strategy. I mean, his track record is definitely deserving of deference.

Exactly! That’s all the GOP is anymore, just about getting reelected. Once in office they roll over so Obama can scratch their bellies.

So, four years after ObamaCare was passed, and just three months before the next election, Republicans have finally devised a strategy to run against it?

Great job, Karl!

By the way, as far as I know, Ted Cruz is still the only well known elected Republican in the country who has publicly campaigned for the REPEAL of ObamaCare.

Bottom Line:

The Republican position on ObamaCare is “Mend It, Don't End It.”

So, evidently, the death panels will not only decree that you die, but that you die in pain.

Honestly, isn’t that exactly backwards? Once a patient is in hospice care, shouldn’t pain medications be the only thing being paid for?

Rove needs to explain to me why his precious RINOs will not make the obvious arguments.

I said this early on and I stand by it ... it is a mistake to run against Obamacare. Oh I don’t mean toss it in the mix here and there, but even if focusing on some of these specifics, people REALLY like some of the provisions. Knew it was going to happen.

There is SO much we can run on and all we do is run “against” and do it poorly.

I say again, it is a mistake to run hard against Obamacare. The only place that resonates is very solid red areas anyway.

Read some of the articles I posted in my post 2 on this thread, then get back to me.

Obamacare is all about denying care, including palliative care to “useless eaters”.

“The Republican position on ObamaCare is “Mend It, Don’t End It.”

In my opinion this is a real loser.

It should be “end it”, then make improvements to the system prior to Obamacare one step at a time, in small increments.

You’re right.

Romney’s campaign killed itself with their slogan :
“Obamacare is wrong. We will end it.”

They should have said: “We will fix it.”
The fact is, Obamacare was a done deal and most voters
considered it property already won. They feared and resented any attempt to retract it.

Recognition of their desires would have opened a discussion of alternatives (free-market ones).

Almost all were ignorant of the gory details of the law.
The dems delayed implementation for this reason.
Romney’s campaign was as lame as McCain’s.

Yeah, just because the polls say there is a 2-to-1 majority against Obamacare doen't mean it's not popular or anything...

Re: “There is SO much we can run on and all we do is run “against,” and do it poorly.”

We do it poorly because most of the people we elect are not sincerely “against” the same things we want to stop.

These are the four most critical issues to me:

(1) Massive legal immigration (1.1 million every year).
(2) ObamaCare
(3) Out of control spending
(4) The national debt and unfunded liabilities.

All of them involve being “against” something.

Except for Ted Cruz, Senator Jeff Sessions, and Congressman Steve King, I can't think of any other well known elected Republican who is sincerely trying to stop any of those things.
