Bergdahl could get $350G tax-free, if cleared by Army

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl could have a tax-free $350,000 dropped into his bank account if the current investigation into his disappearance from his base in Afghanistan was not desertion, and if he is deemed to have been a prisoner of war for the five years he was held by Islamic militants, Fox News has learned.

The 28-year-old soldier, for whom the U.S. traded five senior Taliban operatives held at Guantanamo Bay, was set to return to active duty Monday after spending six weeks in medical rehab at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio.

“Essentially he’ll be working a desk job,” Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren told reporters at the Pentagon Monday.

Bergdahl is due approximately $200,000 in back pay for the time he was in Taliban hands. He would be eligible for another $150,000 if an ongoing probe determines he was a prisoner of war. Both sums could be tax free for Bergdahl, who was promoted from private first class to sergeant during the time he was held.

Definitely, DNC Judge material if not the centerpiece as a DNC Senator.

Zer0's running mate for Zer0's 3rd term.
Oh, didn't he tell you? Two term restriction, lifted.
Minimum age? lifted.
By Presidential fiat.

Bowe, war hero. Right up there with Kerry.
Did you know John Kerry served in Viet Nam?

In other news... Pentagon gives pink slips to thousands of soldiers, including active-duty officers.

I think what we are going to learn, 10 years from now, is that “Bagdad” Bergdahl was a part of a “very sophisticated ruse” so he could embed himself with the enemy and provide troves of intelligence on operations by terrorists, their mindset and how they recruit.

He’s a hero...

He will get cleared by the Army, If it tales the personal intervention of Obama. It is part of the transformation of America that the voters voted for in 2008 and 2012.

He’ll probably be given a secret service detail. Otherwise his fellow soldiers will, by oath, preserve some vestage of respect for our army.

Unfortunately, Bergdahl will come out of this smelling good. This will not be allowed to tarnish obama’s image.

Yeh don’t pay any attention to the smiley pic of Bergdahl and the Taliban commander. He’s no deserter, he’s not a collaborator.

I loved the way the Taliban jokingly told Bergie not to come back to Afghanistan. I’m sure the NV’s were patting McCain on the arm and joking around when he got released. Not.

Right now “the Army” can’t say anything that will prejudice the investigation or any court-martial that may happen.

I remember when I was in the 3rd Armored Division in the 1980s and a soldier was being court martialed; the division commander commented that he thought the soldier was guilty and should go to Leavenworth Military Prison. The defense seized upon that statement and had the case thrown out because the 3AD commander had prejudiced the case by stating the outcome he wanted his subordinate on the jury to find.

I hope folks will just give the Army a chance to do the investigation. I recall when Gen Tony Taguba did the Abugrab investigation, folks said it would be a whitewash. It was NOT and the MP brigade brigadier general commander was relieved and the subordinates punished.

There won't be a court martial. They have already cleared him of aiding the Taliban without even talking to him... or the Taliban. The CinC has declared him some sort of hero.

Hi underlings know better than to step on feet.

Having read the announcements of an unknown military source who made those statements about Bergdahl & the Taliban; I interpreted them as 1) someone wanting a moment of fame as a “confidential source” and 2)stating the obvious, that no investigation had started.

I do not see the statement as an official pronouncement of “clearing him of aiding the Taliban.” Now, if it had been an “unnamed administration source,” that is a different matter.

That's good information. Is it your understanding that the Army reintegrates suspected deserters and collaborators into active duty while investigations into that soldiers conduct are ongoing?

It would seem a very risky course of action.

The Army goes by “innocent until proven guilty.”

We will have to see where Bergdahl is assigned. He could end up in a type of “holding detachment” where soldiers awaiting orders get placed. That would be my preference, rather than assigning him back to an infantry company somewhere. It would not do the Army any good for something to happen to Bergdahl, as some in this thread have hinted at wanting to occur. This is a time for patience.

Personally, I think he is a deserter, based upon the testimony of this fellow squad members.
