Isn’t It Rich?
New York Times ^ | July 12, 2014 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 07/12/2014 9:01:55 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

CHELSEA CLINTON never acted out during the eight years she came of age as America’s first daughter.

No ditching of her Secret Service detail. No fake IDs for underage tippling. No drug scandal. No court appearance in tank top and toe ring. Not even any dirty dancing.

Despite a tough role as the go-between in the highly public and embarrassing marital contretemps of her parents, Chelsea stayed classy.

So it’s strange to see her acting out in a sense now, joining her parents in cashing in to help feed the rapacious, gaping maw of Clinton Inc.

With her 1 percenter mother under fire for disingenuously calling herself “dead broke” when she left the White House, why would Chelsea want to open herself up to criticism that she is gobbling whopping paychecks not commensurate with her skills, experience or role in life?

As the 34-year-old tries to wean some of the cronies from the Clinton Foundation — which is, like the Clintons themselves, well-intended, wasteful and disorganized — Chelsea is making speeches that go into foundation coffers. She is commanding, as The Times’s Amy Chozick reported, up to $75,000 per appearance.

*

There’s something unseemly about it, making one wonder: Why on earth is she worth that much money? Why, given her dabbling in management consulting, hedge-funding and coattail-riding, is an hour of her time valued at an amount that most Americans her age don’t make in a year?

If she really wants to be altruistic, let her contribute the money to some independent charity not designed to burnish the Clinton name as her mother ramps up to return to the White House and as she herself drops a handkerchief about getting into politics.

This is petty. Personally, as a classical liberal (conservative) I believe in free markets; Chelsea Clinton's speeches are worth whatever the market is willing to pay. If Chelsea Clinton can command $75,000 for a speech, so be it. She is a private person and this is nobody’s business but hers, no matter how little I, or anyone else, like her father's behavior or her mother's politics.

That's a nice sentiment. But Chelsea's speeches are NOT worth $75k a pop.

They are simply bribes to be cashed in on later when mom becomes a POTUS candidate.

It is definitely NOT a "free market".

Otherwise Billy Carter would have made a mint giving speeches.

Hell, I would have paid for that.

Chelsea?

C'mon!

Pretty astonishing to see La Dowd take this tack. I cannot disagree with a word I read in the excerpt.

I do remember some drunk pix of Chelsea when she was across the pond in England, but I will say she seems to be a pretty clean living girl, which is to her credit.

But the speaking fees, come on, you may be fooling yourself, but you’re not even fooling Maureen Dowd!

“May they die a slow death...”

Disagree, the MSM has been dying a slow death since they went lefty during the Vietnam war.

May they collapse tomorrow and may we see M. Dowd and all her ilk selling pencils and apples on 6th Avenue.

Now THAT would be a good day!

All of my neckties are older than you, you silly noob-knob.
Chelsea Clinton is a 34 year old public figure with more body work than a ‘57 Chevy who just bought a 10+ million dollar home and “doesn’t worry about money.”
But the harshest criticism of your noobian noobness is that Clinton serial-sycophant Mo Dowd cuts her even less slack than you.
But we’re all impressed with your dedication to the free market system. Now, please excuse me—my sinuses are full of eels.

Disagree, it’s thinly disguised money laundering, a way to fund Hillary! for her presidential run while avoiding campaign finance laws.

There is not a person on earth, including those who’ve signed the checks, who thinks Chelsea Clinton has anything to say that’s worth $75K to listen to.

I do not think her speech is commanding $1.25

I think this is another form of political payoffs.

I remember the British press had a bunch of shots of Chelsea drunk, stumbling and falling. Nothing in our press of course.

If she were to become President (God forbid), would she still have to refuse to ride in a car with a member of the armed service as she did on her parents’ order when she was a teenager? They hated the armed service.

Would you pay $75,000.00 to hear Chelsea Clinton speak?

About anything?

Me either.

Frankly, I wouldn't pay $75.00 to hear anything she might have to say. Further, I would question the motives of any person or group who might do so. While I agree that anyone else is free to pay her whatever she may ask for an appearance, I also am free to question their sanity and/or motivations.

That would be true if was all about a free market. It isn’t.

1) Those willing to pay this price to this airhead are paying for political access... crony capitalism

2) Many colleges and universities are paying this price... with your money

Who is she talking about? The Bush girls? JFK? Bill Clinton? RFK Jr.? Al Gore's son? Palin's daughter? Romney? Bush? Barney Frank? All of the above?

She’s worth the money because dopey, star-struck Democratic hillbillies are willing to pay her the money.
