Gun violence erupted in Chicago over the holiday weekend, with 14 people killed and another 68 wounded from Thursday afternoon to early Monday. Two of the fatal shootings were by Chicago police.
It was the city’s highest concentration of gun violence this year, but in its wake it was ascribed to familiar suspected causes, depending on the source: inadequate policing, lax gun laws, and lack of economic opportunity.
Most of the Chicago shootings took place in areas plagued by school closings and systemic losses in manufacturing jobs: Englewood, Roseland, Gresham, and West Pullman. Most of the fatalities were teenage boys or young adult men.
In gun violence over the Fourth of July weekend last year, 11 people were killed and 62 wounded.
While over the long term gun violence in Chicago is declining, the high-profile street violence is a political liability for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who on Monday released a statement calling the number of shootings and murders “simply unacceptable.”
In 2012, his first year in office, homicides in the city spiked past 500, creating both national headlines and pushback from critics citing budget cuts to the police force and school closings as endemic to the growing problem.
“The solution does not just include policing – although we’ll continue to look for ways to put more police where they’re needed,” Mayor Emanuel said in his statement Monday. “We also have to give our young people alternatives to the street, and as a community we need to demand more of ourselves and our neighbors.”

Also lots of black youth that are doing the vast majority of shootings.

I also like the PC phrase “GUN VIOLENCE!” I never the phrase “KNIFE VIOLENCE.”
I wonder why?????? If we need government control of gun violence we also need government control of knife violence.
The solution to the problem of knife violence is KNIFE CONTROL. Require all citizens with knives of any kind to obtain a certificate from a knife control class before they can even purchase dangerous eating and culinary utensils or any kind of sharp “knifey looking” instrument.
Michele Obama would be able to force people to boil all food to the point that it becomes a mush and does not require the use of a knife to cut it. The only exception would be....of course.....government employees. They could still cook their food like they always have.

So it seems that the bad people in Chicago use firearms an order of magnitude more often than knives. Odd that, since a knife is better for crime, no noise and very debilitating compared to a gunshot wound. Surprised me.

Before we disarm everyone, we might want to look at other circumstances, like culture, race, and patterns of violence in certain urban demographics. Don’t disarm my family because young, black gang members, drug dealers, hip-hoppers and malcontents enjoy shooting people. Stop accepting that anti culture, glorifying it in the media, and making excuses for it. Feed young minds a steady diet of hate and violence, in their world view, their music, their religion and socialization, and violence is what they give back. Respect for human life and human rights has to be taught, and made a part of culture. Manners, decency, kindness and goodwill towards others are traits that are taught and made perfect through practice. Urban Chicago is blowing it, and more gun laws won’t fix the problem.

Lets tell the truth. The cause is “black culture”, where kids are raised by poor, uneducated unmarried women on welfare and with poor (or no) male role models.
One of the local idiots quoted in the article states “You are not getting a guy out of a gang until you bring him a job. They have got to find jobs,” he says. “A lot of these [social] programs probably have a small impact, and are probably worth doing, but in the long term, there needs to be sustainable employment for these guys.” “BRING” them a job?? One small problem- they have no education, no skills and criminal backgrounds. Who in their right mind would hire them for anything?
Yeah, I noticed that. I also noticed how well armed and how much armor they're wearing. Again, "For me but not for thee".
But who are doing the shootings and killings? Nuns...the elderly...immigrants from Chile? Until young, black males violent activities are curbed, the shootings and killings will continue.
Once all guns are banned and out of the hands of honest people, the Liberals (just like Stalin, Hitler, and Mao) can start going after the real criminals - the ones who are a threat to their power.
