Why Democrats Are So Confident
National Journal ^ | July 2, 2014 | By Ronald Brownstein

It was a revealing convergence Monday when the five-member conservative Supreme Court majority delivered the Hobby Lobby contraception decision even as President Obama announced that House Republicans had officially shelved immigration reform.

Both disputes reaffirmed the GOP's identity as the champion of the forces most resistant to the profound demographic and cultural dynamics reshaping American life—and Democrats as the voice of those who most welcome these changes.

And both clashes captured a parallel shift: While Republicans took the offense on most cultural arguments through the late 20th century, now Democrats from Obama on down are mostly pressing these issues, confident that they represent an expanding majority of public opinion.

Veteran pollster Stanley B. Greenberg captures this almost unprecedented Democratic assurance when he declares flatly: "Republicans are on the losing side of all of these trends."

The result is that amid public unease over Obama's economic and foreign policy record, cultural affinity has become the Democrats' most powerful electoral weapon. The party's deepening embrace of cultural liberalism may make it tougher for it to hold some red-state House and Senate seats, but is improving its position with the cosmopolitan states and growing demographic groups that key its presidential majority. In a year when so many other clouds are gathering over them, that's a trade most Democrats would probably take in a heartbeat.

Only 6% of the people between the ages of 18-24 were paying attention to the SCOTUS decision.

Just because you no longer are able to MAKE someone else pay for your contraceptives doesn’t mean that you don’t have access to said contraceptives. Are ‘the people’ really that stupid?

Over-confidence is a great thing for your enemy to have right before you beat the living snot out of ‘em.

When Liberal policies fail, and they will, the Left will blame the opposition. Just name one country that has returned to prosperity after embracing Command and Control policies.
We’ll just have tales to tell our grandchildren.

Democrats are confident because they run the whole political system and are using it against their enemies with impunity.

The IRS stacked the vote for Barack Obama in 2012.

Watch for a repeat performance in 2014.

The Dems feel down because things are going against them so its up to the #1 Dem cheerleader and butt-kisser in the MSM, Ron Browstein, to cheer them up with an article about how they will win in the long run.

...issues that divide the electorate along cultural lines, including gun control, gay rights, abortion, and climate change(which politically pivots on trust in science).

I would alter this slightly by saying it pivots not about trust in science but on trust in scientists. But even that's not quite right. It really comes down to realizing that "global warming" is a political agenda masquerading as a scientific issue and refusing to pretend otherwise. As an engineer I loves me some science but I knew global warming was a crock from the get go.

How is that different? The job of the young is to get jobs, find mates, marry and create families. It’s not 1968. Most young people won’t get political until Washington starts touching their lives in ways they don’t like. Like what happened with us...

And stupid older people? Do you really want that group getting ‘more involved’? God help us....

The crux of the matter is whether people will vote cultural or economic issues. In 1992 the GOP bet on culture (which was solidly with us) and the Dems on economics (which was somewhat with them). We lost.

When the GOP pivoted to economic (and by extension good government) issues in 1994 we won.

If the Dems are betting on cultural issues and not economics, history is against them. If they turn out to be right, history is against all of us.

We have entered the era of tribal politics. In the long term the Dems will be the permanent majority party. Demography is destiny.

“When the GOP pivoted to economic (and by extension good government) issues in 1994 we won.”

If Romney had run a hard hitting campaign on economic issues. Instead he had no message and allowed Obama to run define the campaign as “war on women”.

Actually the Republicans in 2012 could have run a winning campaign on the “end Obamacare” theme but since they nominated the architect of Obamacare as their standard bearer they had no credibility on healthcare.

This writer forgets the spiritual aspect of American life.

Jesus isn’t a Republican, but he isn’t a Democrat either. And the segment of society that embraces Judeo-Christian ethics is on the CORRECT side of history.

For everyone else, there is hell to pay, literally and figuratively.

Ultimately the dems will swamp us as demographic and cultural changes take hold. They only need to wait 4 or 5 more years and they’ll have a permanent chokehold on the Senate as they do the White House.
