Negotiating With Terrorists: Inside the Capture and Release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl
The Blaze ^ | 2014-06-01 | Brad Thor

U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl has been released from captivity. That’s the good news. Every American and every freedom-loving person in the world should rejoice. The reunion with his family will be a major media moment and a major moment for the president. The bad news is that President Obama has now placed a target on the back of every single American – civilian and military alike.

For more than 200 years, the United States has had a policy of not trading prisoners for American hostages. That policy has been shredded and international travel to even cities like London, Paris, and Amsterdam will now pose an exceptional danger for Americans.

And as Americans, we must all ask: at what price was Sgt. Bergdahl’s freedom purchased?

According to reports, Sgt. Bergdahl was under the influence when he walked off his base in Paktika Province, Afghanistan and into the arms of the Haqqani terrorism network.

This is a good article that explains who was actually "holding" Bergdahl:

It is important to note that the Haqqanis are not the same thing as the Afghan Taliban. The two are different groups. They each have their own distinct and separate leadership council, or “Shura” that they report to. The Haqqanis are heavily tied to both Al Qaeda (providing them safe passage and support) and the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence agency, also known as the ISI. The Haqqanis are a heavily criminal enterprise sowing and feeding off of the chaos in the Afghanistan/Pakistan region. Envision Al Qaeda crossed with the Sopranos and you begin to get the picture of what these thugs are like.

Time to sew a New Zealand flag on your backpack, kids. I don’t know if even the Canada flag will work anymore.

It gets worse. Thor explains that the Haqqani's would have wanted one of their own to be released, and if that was refused, they would have simply asked for more money. And then he explains the consequences:

If the Obama Administration did pay a ransom to the Haqqanis – through the Quetta Shura, the Pakistani ISI, or via a wealthy Middle Eastern Haqqani supporter acting as a middleman – the United States would have knowingly funded a terrorist organization. The United States would need a big fig leaf to hide that funding from the public and the Afghan Taliban/Quetta Shura would have gladly played along. They would have also made the United States pay through the nose for that cooperation. Judging by the list of terrorists the U.S. was forced to release, that’s one possible interpretation of what happened.

Only time will tell. For now, one thing is clear – it is open season on American civilians and American military personnel around-the-world.

Where President Obama failed to close Gitmo, America’s enemies may just do it for him. All they need to do is kidnap enough Americans, and they’ll have the place cleaned out in no time.

The media will now cover the deserter’s return instead of the VA. Obama rejoices.

Simple explanation for a simple-minded President: He doesn’t think beyond the one day, immediate, boost to his presidential ratings and his ego. To him, the long run is today. Without a doubt, the worst, most damaging, president in the history of this Republic.

There is no good excuse for this guy deserting his unit in a combat zone. Even if he was not on guard duty, the defense is planned to use every weapon available. Bergdahl leaving left a hole in that defense. Now, he knew that, but he left anyway. He left his unit vulnerable to attack. He left his buddies open to slaughter. He was an American Soldier and he was paid American taxpayer money to behave like an American Soldier. He crapped on his unit. He crapped on his buddies. He crapped on you and me and every American citizen. He deserted in a combat zone. This kind of behavior is intolerable and must be corrected.

Boew Bergdahl will become the next John Kerry. Kerry became famous by not fulfilling his reserve commitment and protesting and throwing away his medals. Bergdahl deserted his unit, and men died looking for him. Now the president has made him a celebrity by exchanging 5 Taliban officers for his release, when in fact Bowe is most likely a Taliban sympathizer now. The Taliban are Sunni, Obama was raised as a Sunni, and Bowe is a Sunni. It’s already been determined the religion of the Anti-Christ will be Muslim, and Obama sympathizes with the Muslims. So, Bergdahl will run for congress here soon and the LW will campaign for him and honor him because he hates the US and wants the US to become a Muslim country. An Anti-Christ country, a country that will denounce Israel and cut off Israel. The goal of liberals and the Anti-Christ is to kill all the Jews and destroy Israel. Obama, Bergdahl, Liberals, LW radical groups, Muslims all serve the Anti-Christ

Not really. Obama negotiated a deal with terrorists to trade five terrorists for one disloyal deserter. I suspect a more noble American would still remain abandoned by Obama.

Bowe should put away his prayer beads and shave his Islamic beard.

Poor Obama, his sophisticated policies are once again denigrated (is that racist?) by the rubes.

>And as Americans, we must all ask: at what price was Sgt. Bergdahl’s freedom purchased?<

.
And as Americans, we must all ask: why, if he is a traitor, do we even want him back when we have no intention of holding him accountable for his actions?

We got screwed twice: we received a useless soldier that we will never be able to trust again and, in return, we gave five valuable terrorists who can now start killing more Americans.

"...Every American and every freedom-loving person in the world should rejoice..."

I don't get this statement, but this is "The Blaze". Why should I, as an American, rejoice about this? It is completely wrong in nearly every single way.

It is entirely possible Bergdahl has been working intimately with them for the past five years, providing intel and insight on our military wherever he could.

It is also possible that he is a willing participant in this exchange, not because he wants to go home, but because he knows it is an advantageous time for his teammates (er...captors) and he can play a key role in getting them out of Gitmo because the current administration is ripe for the picking (not that they don't want to help)

He should be prosecuted for treason and desertion, but I don't think it is going to happen.
