Cliven Bundy And The Entitlement Of The Privileged
The Washington Post ^ | 4-29-14 | Katrina vanden Heuvel

Posted on 04/30/2014 8:13:54 AM PDT by Flame Retardant

Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy's 15 minutes of fame are up. He was a Fox News poster boy when he refused to pay fees for grazing his cows on federal land and greeted federal rangers with the threat of armed resistance. But when he voiced his views on the joys of slavery for "the Negro," his conservative champions fled from his side.

What is interesting about Bundy, however, is not his tired racism but rather his remarkable sense of entitlement. His cattle have fed off public lands for two decades while he refused to pay grazing fees that are much lower than those he would have to pay for private land (and lower even than the government's costs)....

As we've seen in recent years, this sense of entitlement pervades the privileged. Billionaire hedge fund operator Stephen Schwarzman feels so entitled to his obscene hedge fund tax dodge--the "carried interest" exemption--that he viewed Obama's call to close the loophole as "a war. It's like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939." Tom Perkins, co-founder of venture capital fund Kleiner,Perkins,Caufield&Byers, considers mere criticism of the wealthiest Americans akin to the persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany.

When Republican Dave Camp, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, had the temerity to propose a surcharge on the biggest financial houses (those with $500?billion in assets or more), to correct for the subsidy and competitive advantage provided by being "too big to fail," Wall Street went ballistic....

No one exemplifies this sense of entitlement more than the billionaire Koch brothers, self-proclaimed libertarians who pour hundreds of millions of dollars into supporting think tanks, lobbies and candidates who will protect their right to pollute our air and water while leaving taxpayers to pay billions of dollars to repair damage done....

A pity the writer was as concerned about the sense of entitlement that passes for ‘good government’ in Washington, DC

I saw a mini-debate on MSNBC over this ranch cow standoff and it was claimed that the Dept of Agriculture can just confiscate the $$$ from the eventual sale of the cows, before it even reaches Bundy.

....Meaning the armed confrontation (by the government) was unnecessary.

Sterling got the cameras away from Bundy (finally)

Total disconnect by my Frenemy, Katrina.
No one thought Bundy shouldn’t pay his fees. Many thought the government fees and the show of force was excessive.
The “Progressives” think they’ve won again.

May I venture a guess that someone named Katrina vanden Heuvel is among the oldest of the old blood in New York City, going all the way back to the days when it was called New Amsterdam?

Whereas Cliven Bundy is just a hard-working cowboy whose family has worked that difficult land for more than a hundred years, while her family attended concerts and opera and fashionable parties?

Talk about the 1%. Most of the 1% are rich, privileged liberals, like this lady.

The writer is a very hard core radical leftist who’s an editor, publisher and part owner of The Nation magazine. She’s to the left of Van Jones.

The colonies recieve the protection of the crown. The French and Indian War was costly to the empire and the colonies should be happy to reimburse the crown through any tax it so chooses to impose.

The federal government owns 86% of the land in Nevada and more than 30% of the land in the USA. that's unconstitutional : http://benswann.com/lofti-who-actually-owns-americas-land-a-deeper-look-at-the-bundy-ranch-crisis/ >

the government OWNING this much land in Nevada and other states is socialism/communism. the land must be given to the states and individuals NOW. Nothing is more monstrous to me than government owning land

The gov is using 30% of the U.S. land for environmentalism when private companies could be using those vast resources to get oil, oil shale, logging, farmland etc.. Use Google to see that just on government owned lands in the west there is more recoverable oil than all of the rest of the world combined

The accusation that someone is a “racist” is all that the counterculture Democrats and the counterculture Democrat’s Left Stream Media need today for control a large population of people who dare to think and/or speak the same ideas as the accused “racist.”

Thus, the power of the word “racist” is valid only as long as no facts are required by the targeted population to substantiate the accusation by those who do the accusing.

If, someday, the accused is considered “innocent until proven guilty” by the facts, then the power of false accusatory words such as “racists,” “domestic terrorists” and other mind-control words used by the counterculture Democrats and their media, will be relegated to the low level used by the school yard bullies who tried to manipulate all of us back in the day.

IOW, we, OURSELVES, allow ourselves to be manipulated because we have forgotten the words of wisdom from our early childhoods: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me!”

Wake up America! The Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement have long since been Won and Done!

Time to grow up America, reject the PC Word Police, mind-control, school-yard bullies on the counterculture Left!

If “We, the People,” stand for FREEDOM of speech, then we must insist that ALL, (especially the manipulators on The Left), listen as well as they speak!

It is time, - - - time for a change.

DC 25%? Surely it’s 100%, since it’s a federal enclave in the first place.

Hurricane Katrina Van Dumb Hooval at it again. This witch is the poster girl for leftist entitlement. She has never lifted a finger and would have never lifted a finger to work the land like Bundy. How much of her labor went into the food she buys?

She sounds like another overeducated liberal idiot trust funder.

Yes. Naturally, she prefers not to talk about all her rich, illustrious ancestors. But I’d say that she’s definitely a left-wing trust-fund baby.

Even Wikipedia suggests as much:

Vanden Heuvel was born in New York City, the daughter of Jean Stein, an heiress, best-selling author, and editor of the literary journal Grand Street, and William vanden Heuvel, an attorney, former US ambassador, member of John F. Kennedy’s administration, businessman, and author. She has one sister and two step-siblings. Her maternal grandparents were Music Corporation of America founder Jules C. Stein and Doris Babbette Jones (originally Jonas). Through her maternal grandmother, vanden Heuvel is a distant cousin of actor and comedian George Jessel.[2]

Vanden Heuvel graduated from the Trinity School in 1977.[3] She studied politics and history at Princeton University, writing her senior thesis on McCarthyism and serving as editor-in-chief of the Nassau Weekly. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton in 1981.[2]

Most people have misunderstood this whole kerfuffle. What this amounts to is another demonstration of the failure of Communism. The land is owned and controlled by the government for public use. The party bosses re-allocated the land at the expense of the ranchers for the benefit of...The party bosses?
