Rick Perry Dismisses Nevada Rancher's Racist Remarks
Business Insider ^ | 04/24/2014 | Hunter Walker

In an interview with CBS This Morning Thursday, Texas Governor Rick Perry discussed the situation at the Bundy Ranch in Nevada and racist comments made by the man at the center of the recent standoff there, rancher Cliven Bundy. Perry said Bundy's remarks were a "side issue" and pointed to a land dispute in Texas with the same federal agency Bundy battled in Nevada, the Bureau of Land Management.

"I don’t know what he said but the fact is Cliven Bundy is a side issue here compared to what we’re looking at in the state of Texas," Perry said. "He is an individual—deal with his issues as you may. What we have in the state of Texas, I don’t get distracted about, is the federal government is coming in and attempting, from our perspective, to take over private property. And you must—f this country’s to stay the land of freedom and liberty, private property rights must be respected."

In an interview with the New York Times published Thursday, Bundy claimed blacks would be "better off as slaves." CBS This Morning co-anchor Norah O'Donnell had asked Perry for his thoughts on Bundy's "very inflammatory racial comments." Earlier in the show, Perry more generally discussed Bundy's standoff with BLM officials that attempted to round up his cattle after he refused to pay fees for grazing on federal land.

"I think Cliven Bundy is a side story. The federal government and how the federal government deals with these issues of private citizens, whether it’s on the public lands or whether, in the state of Texas we have a big issue about whether this is private land or this is public land. And rather than sending armed troops,

Bundy claimed blacks would be "better off as slaves."

Audiotape, or it didn't happen.

Until someone produces tape with Bundy actually uttering these things, it's just hearsay. More likely, it's a deliberate, calculated smear to discredit Bundy and take the wind out of the sails of the growing push-back against Big Brother's land grabs.

Here's what he actually said:

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.

Perry did NOT comment on Bundy’s statement.

That's correct. Instead, he called him a "side issue" in order to demean Bundy personally. Bundy is not the side issue; slavery is the side issue.

I don't know what Perry's views are on slavery, but he should not be afraid to state them one way or the other. There is no need for Perry to demean Bundy personally as a side issue just to avoid taking a stand on the issue of slavery.

And the lib media selectively plays gotcha while ignoring one of their candidate’s remarks about blacks and Jews. And of course, our side always falls for this instead of smacking them with it.

No politician is going to defend comments attributed to Bundy on blacks nor should they have to. It is a distraction and a can of worms. We need to stay on point and not be put on defense by the left.

Very interesting. Who is that candidate and what did he say?

So how is living on the demorat plantation with food stamps, section 8 housing, WIC, SNAP, EIC, Obamacare, Obamaphones, affirmative action, or any of the other 77 welfare programs different than slavery when the recipient has no freedom other than to vote for the “Man” to keep living on the plantation?

Do you remember the ni**erhead debacle?

It was complete BS and Perry is not going anywhere near the supposed Bundy comment.

No bias there by the BI. Can't even make it through the headline without injecting tendentious, judgemental garbage.

“Millions of blacks are still slaves. AND TO WHO? The communists Democratic State, the Federal Government.”....

Basically, IF Bundy did say blacks would be better of being slaves, he was referring to the control gubmint has over them and how the gubmint continues to advance the blacks dependency on the gubmint. Sounds pretty straight forward to me. This is NOT meant to be considered racist either.

“... in order to demean Bundy personally”?

Tau food, how can you, or anyone, discern the reason another person says something?

Why are you adding this sinister motive to Perry’s reasoning?

Are you trying to demean Perry?

My point is that Bundy stands for an issue (an encroaching, abusive and arbitrary Federal Government). I don't consider that issue to be a "side issue" these days. And, as a figurehead of the movement to resist abusive Government, Bundy is certainly not a "side issue" these days.

The "side issue" is this baloney about slavery. I sympathize with Bundy and his struggle. i don't consider him to be a "side issue." At the same time, I am not afraid to say that I am totally opposed to slavery.

Perry could remain supportive of Bundy's anti-government cause and separate himself from any pro-slavery taint by just coming out and saying that he opposes slavery. It's not that hard to do. I just did it.

Well, by dismissing Bundy as a “side issue” Perry is not showing much courage.

Really?

You think Rick Perry should have stepped on that land mine? You think Perry should have made Bundy’s racist remarks the main issue instead of the Federal land grabbing going on?

Do you really think that it would be politically dangerous for Perry to state that he is opposed to slavery? I think that's a safe position. And that would free Perry to remain supportive of Bundy's real battle - his struggle with the Feds. He wouldn't have to dismiss Bundy as a "side issue."

If Perry thinks the slavery issue is a "land mine," then I think he should do some polling on the issue. Most people are adamantly opposed to slavery.

What in the HELL are you talking about slavery for?

I think you lost sight of the main issue - if you even knew what the main issue was even about in the first place.
