The really good news is it was 6-2.

“University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and admissions director Ted Spencer have decried the affirmative action ban, saying outright that the school cannot achieve a fully diverse student body with it in place.”

How kind of them to want to ‘help’ out all those poor stupid folks who can’t get in otherwise. Golly gee seems to me that IF they cannot attract folks to their college/university then maybe they ought to try looking harder.

Michigan public schools are miserable just like California’s. No wonder people don’t ‘qualify’ to get into the state university when the teachers unions have so ill prepared them for life and future education

"It's impossible," Spencer said in a recent interview, "to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors."

There is so MUCH wrong in this statement and the twisted ways of their thinking, I just don't know where to begin....

“It’s impossible,” Spencer said in a recent interview, “to achieve diversity on a regular basis if race cannot be used as one of many factors.”<<<

a) Why is “diversity” more important than excellence and fairness?
b) Why is it “impossible”? That statement sounds racist to me, as it assumes that students of certain “races” are inherently inferior and unable to compete.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Michigan's controversial ban on affirmative action in public college admissions in a divided opinion

Actually a 6-2 dicision (one recusal) with this court is not that divided.

Even small victories like this give us a ray of hope that we can beat back the leftist hordes ruining the country. I haven’t seen Jesse and the Rainbow Coalition lately. I think they’re overdue for a march.

Impossible? Stunning statement to make. Maybe they should analyze why blacks don’t want to go to that college and start from there. Instead their answer is to use racism to achieve diversity. Incredible.

That the people of Michigan are saying ‘we think that racism is wrong, that you should be judged by your achievements rather than the color of your skin.’

The University of Michigan is saying ‘we think that the only thing that matters is how many in a certain skin color group graduate each year.’

White students beware; if the University can’t figure out a way to control the front door, they’ll just have to start working on the other side. Is there a ban on affirmative action in grading in the state?

Blacks comprise just 4.6 percent of undergraduates this year, compared to 8.9 percent in 1995 and 7 percent in 2006.

Funny how Jews don't need affirmative action, and they suffered a mass extermination in Europe and extreme prejudice in this nation in the past century. Perhaps Blacks should stop complaining and start reading to their children.

Controversial? Really?

Push-back against Leftist causes is always “controversial,” even when a majority of the public and, in this case, a strong majority of the Court agrees that affirmative discrimination is wrong.

GOOD.

University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and admissions director Ted Spencer have decried the affirmative action ban, saying outright that the school cannot achieve a fully diverse student body with it in place.

AA has consequences, real consequences for those who are passed over in favor of the lesser qualified.

What about them? Why don't they matter?

I well know the consequences, I saw it in my own home when my daughter applied for colleges and saw those far below her in class ranking and test scores get accepted -- with full rides-- to colleges to which she had been rejected.

No one cares about the ones who are shut out. They don't matter to cultural marxists like Coleman and Spence; only racial head counts, not matter how unfair and unjust.

Who cares? The school exists to EDUCATE, not foster "diversity". Ted Spencer and Mary Sue Coleman must be brain damaged.

So UofMI would rather have academically under-qualified students so they can brag of their diversity? Does that make sense at all?

Doesn’t MI have a number of less competitive, non “public Ivy,” colleges beyond UofMI ? Something wrong with going there?

In VA, as it turns out, grads of state school, George Mason Univ, do as well as - and better financially than - grads of the state’s “public Ivies,” WIlliam and Mary and UVA.
