Actually, speaking for myself, it’s uninterested in killing people and getting Americans killed in order to intervene in affairs in Asia and Europe. 100 years and thousands of the bravest Americans dead is Enough.

Boy, I like Steyn, but this article is almost 50% quotes from other journalists. Not much effort.
It’s more than a direct correlation (between the US elite’s preoccupation with social issues . . .). The falling international status of the U. S. is the natural outgrowth of its inane, immoral, illogical domestic policies and pronouncements. The backbone of its former power, its righteousness, is gone.
That may be true but what I remember after 9/11 are news items about and callers to talk shows saying that they and others refuse to show the Flag because it was too Republican. Also remember that network and cable news personalities either refused to or were ordered not to wear lapel pins showing the Flag.
In the Second World War, when the Japanese took Singapore and inflicted what Churchill called the most ignominious defeat in British military history, it was famously said of the colony's ill-prepared defenses that the guns were pointing the wrong way. In America today, the guns seem to be pointing the wrong way.
That is why I submit this addition to an earlier comment in the column:

Agreed - We have plenty to worry about here. We are losing our nation and it is time to regroup and figure out who is friend or foe within.
