KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - A woman from west Knoxville found a body under her deck while hunting for Easter eggs with her son Wednesday.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports Tara Hanouskova smelled an odor that progressively got worse over the past week, but could never pinpoint the source.

On Wednesday, however, while hunting for Easter eggs with her three-year-old, she noticed something with a pair of feet clad in tennis shoes in the crawl space under her deck.

She explained that the odor wasn't consistent nor strong; she only smelled it off and on until it got so bad she decided to peer under her deck to check it out.

"I really don't even know how he got there," Hanouskova said.

If you smell it you will know what it is. I think it is somehow programed into the primal part of our brain.

Update http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2014/apr/19/homeless-man-found-dead-under-deck-identified/ This is in the Bearden area near Kingston Pike off of lower Sutherland Ave. It was a younger homeless man. Knoxville has become somewhat a homeless magnet due in part to a large homeless shelter in the area. Where he was found would be close to fast food businesses etc.

Notice the absence of a race description? At an adult height of five foot four, which is short by average American standards, my guess is he was an illegal immigrant whose state side family refused to pay ransom to what they thought was a bluffing Coyote.

Looks like he got there of his own free will looking for a place to sleep. PD doesn’t suspect foul play likely natural causes.

No he likely wasn’t an illegal {look at link I posted} but there’s about 50% odds he wasn’t from the Knoxville area though. The area he was found is within walking distance of several missions downtown.

How does a dead body found under a private resident’s deck seem like no foul play or natural causes? Also who decides, “ok, we have a rotten smell for the last two weeks, so let’s invite the kids in the neighborhood over to have an easter egg hunt”??? I don’t buy her story.

The story mentions the body was found when she was looking for easter eggs and looked under the deck. It then mentions a completely different scenario in that the smell would come and go but once it got progressively worse, she decided to look under the deck to find the source of the stench. So which is it? Easter Eggs, or to locate the smell? Can’t have both.

Yes. And not just for humans. The smell of dead members of one's own species provokes a strong reactions in everything from ants to sharks to horses.

Critters that didn't react are statistically more likely to succumb to the same fate and not pass on their genes.

We live in Kansas. One evening after Katrina and Rita, we were able to stand on our second story deck and smell decomp and wet wood on the light breeze from the south east. Later we were done there on a mission trip and drove out on the coast and saw the bloated cows and gaters. uhg.

Why would she hunt for Easter eggs in a place that she didn’t hide Easter eggs?

Read the article in post 23 and look at the pictures. Then it will make more sense. The body was under her back deck. Look at the yard. It's steep. The deck close up to the house is low and ideal place where homeless seek because they can not be seen. Also the reason she likely didn't notice him before. The area the body was found in is frequented by homeless due to nearby businesses including fast food.

I drive through that area {Sutherland Ave} several times a month. It's roughly 4-5 miles from downtown area where the missions are. Kingston Pike in upper Bearden is a major business area. Going from there up to a residence to sleep under a deck would make sense. The person is less likely to be seen by a cop.

Yea The University Of Tennessee has it. Forest Hills the neighborhood this happened in is a quiet neighborhood. This seems to be a woman and a special needs son. Forest Hills BLVD used to be a through road that crossed the interstate and came out on Papermill Rd. Interstate upgrades over the past decade or two lead to the tearing down of the interstate overpass and it is now a dead end road. But it is also close to Kingston Pike in the Bearden area where homeless frequent.

It's mainly a wooded neighborhood and at night yea a homeless person could sneak up and find a place to hide. The deck by the pictures seems to be her back yard with a steep bank going down hill behind her house.

Seriously, since the decedent was long gone, nothing appears to have been lost by pursuit of this approach, and the child was likely spared needless trauma.

Agreed. Some one used some common sense for a change.

Unfortunately, I’ve smelled that smell.

The intensity is weather dependent, to some degree. A cool, relatively dry spot such as under a deck won't be as intense as say, a closed vehicle in the hot summer sun. Dessication affects the intensity as well.

Decomposing human flesh in warm climate smells putrid sweet

Not wholly unlike a dead swollen cow for example

Its unmistakable.

I have never gotten used to it.....that nor dead children.
