CNN ^

(CNN) -- Michael Bloomberg is investing a chunk of his personal fortune to minimize the influence of the National Rifle Association. The former New York City mayor pledged $50 million to his new group Everytown for Gun Safety, an umbrella organization for his two other gun control groups: Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. It aims to make the political climate more supportive of gun control. The new organization plans to compete against the NRA by adopting its playbook. The NRA has built an impressive and effective organization that touts millions of members, a robust lobbying organization and a massive campaign arm.

This is reality in 2014. The $50 million? It’ll last around ten months. Media gurus, lawyers, and political hacks will soak up the money on hotels, air travel, TV ads in urban areas where it means nothing, foundation dues, etc. It’s a charity write-off for Bloomberg...at best. Unless he wants to donate $50 million a year....every single year for a decade....that’s the only viable way that this means progress for the amount of capital invested.

Face it....all it takes is some eighteen year old kid who makes a YouTube video over the destruction of a human life by a hammer, a baseball bat, a drunk boat driver, or some evil character with a machete. For an hour’s work....he takes down $10 million in TV ads....and the kid’s cost? Nothing. That’s why this Bloomberg project dissolves so easily.

I hope he keeps pending it until he’s broke. The man clearly needs a wakeup call. His money has gone to his head.

I wish Jesus would appear to him and relate the rich man / eye of the needle concept to him personally so he would stop with his assault on American citizens...: )

I think his spending is great! I expect the added attention his $50M of commercials and such creates will expand NRA membership by a couple of million, maybe more. So, I say, rave on Bloomberg, lol :)

Whatever - but the LAST THING the Democrats want to talk about now is gun control, and they certain wish that their lame duck president would SHUT UP once and for all on the issue.

You have a point - Obama and the Dems last year did more for the NRA and gun ownership (by scaring the crap of out of Second Amendment supporters) than even Reagan could have dreamed of.

The more they talk gun control, the more people buy guns, and the elected Dems know FULL WELL that gun owners are next to impossible to bring back to their party.

I’m a big fan of gun safety. I would spend that money on concealed carry and constitutional carry laws, which improve safety more than any other laws on the books. I’d spend it on repealing unconstitutional laws that make it harder for decent people to own firearms for critical safety issues such as self-defense. I’d spend it on funding firearms training for the poor and for minorities, who are most likely to be victims of violent crime and thus in most need of firearms for safety. You could do a lot for safety with $50M, but Bloomie will waste it on making the country more vulnerable.

Go for it. I have bad news for that narcissistic little turd. No one likes him, no one trusts him, and because of that, no one is going to listen to him. As a result, he’s probably going to have the opposite effect as the one he intended.

“The new organization plans to compete against the NRA by adopting its playbook.”

Yes, by all means - the NRA gains the political support of millions of Americans while Bloomberg gathers the support of... oh... hundreds, at least.

The guy wants to p*ss away his money, so let him p*ss away his money.

This will develop into another problem for the Democrats. THEY know gun grabbing is a loser and with few exceptions don’t want to talk Second Amendment. Look at the failures in the Democrat controlled Senate.

Make no mistake.

He wants YOUR guns—every single one of them with no exceptions.

Just government thugs, criminals, AND HIS (ARMED) BODYGUARDS would have weapons.

No such thing as armed self-defense ANYMORE—you are open to every crook they can IMPORT or hire.
