It increasingly looks as if the Republicans will regain control of Congress this fall, with the GOP narrowly winning back a majority in the Senate and the House GOP either retaining or slightly building on its majority. But will the two top Republican leaders House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell -- be around to enjoy the spoils of victory?
Both Boehner of Ohio and McConnell of Kentucky are crafty and highly resilient veterans who would be difficult for their opponents to bring down even under the best of circumstances. Yet McConnell is facing arguably one of his toughest reelection campaigns this fall while Boehner appears headed for another tough internal challenge from far-right House conservatives for the speakership shortly after the mid-term election.
While some political experts say it is far too soon to speculate on what the future holds for McConnell and Boehner, there are clearly some troubling signs on the horizon for the two leaders:
Mitch McConnell: While McConnell is expected to easily fend off a primary challenge from Tea Party favorite Matt Bevin, it will be a much rockier road for the 71-year-old leader in the general election against Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democratic secretary of state. Lundergan Grimes, held an early 46 percent to 42 percent lead over McConnell in a Feb. 7 SurveyUSA poll conducted by the Courier-Journal and WHAS-TV in Louisville. A Rasmussen poll a few days earlier showed the two in a virtual deadlock.

You are an idiot for calling him a moron.
That may be true.
I also am probably rude and probably out of line for calling the poster a moron.
I possibly made a mistake in inferring that the poster was a moron for posting that comment.
However, that mistake is understandable given the fact that the poster posted a profoundly incorrect and most definitely moronic statement
You’re accusing me of name-calling?
The only way we beat Pelosi, Reid, & O with true conservatives is by working with the Tea Party to defeat the RINOs in the primary. Hopefully, you’ve contributed and worked with them.
If we can’t do that, can’t beat them in the primary then it’s either put Pelosi, Reid, & O back in leadership or change the balance of power. That would mean putting Republicans in the majority.
That’s it, that’s all we can do. For those of you who think preaching a passive approach to liberty is the answer (i.e. not voting or voting for the Democrat) you are dead wrong. THAT’S what has kept Democrats in power.
Democrats pull the lever every single time, many times more than once. They don’t need our help.
Uh... when last I checked, the Republicans have done pretty much every thing they can to shut down the Obama Agenda given their only control the House and they have been remarkably successful in many regards.
To make any meaningful progress on turning the clock back and reversing the damage the Obama Administration and the Democrats have done will take at least gaining control of the Senate and it will take a veto proof majority to do any serious reversing while Obama is in office.
If the ideological purists on the Conservative side had only turned out to vote for Republican Senate candidates and not voted at all for Romney, Conservatives could have had a voice in the Senate as well.
The way Harry Reid is running the Senate, the Republican minority has ZERO power to do ANYTHING
Those two feckless ‘Rat ENABLERS must GO!
“ANY Republican, even the biggest RHINO , is better than ANY Democrat currently in Congress or up for election in 2014.”
Ordinarily, you would be correct. However, in two elections this year, in KY and SC, removing McConnell and Graham at any cost would advance the principles of Liberty, for they are both very dangerous oligarchs. The democrat would indeed be, the lesser of two evils!
ANY Republican, even the biggest RHINO , is better than ANY Democrat currently in Congress or up for election in 2014.
That is a statement born of abject ignorance on its face! There you have the word “any.” That’s where the problem lies. It’s one thing to say well, Scott Brown isn’t my kind of Republican but he’s way ahead of Shaneen in terms of where he stands, and it’s an entirely different matter to say that one of the GOP’s “top leaders” ( i.e. McConnell) will “lead us to victory” if given the chance. The only reason to re-elect McConnell would be if not doing so would keep the Senate in RAT hands. If we can get control of the Senate and send old Scrotum Chin back home permanently, I am all for it. In fact, with one or two exceptions, ousting the GOP “old guard” is a good thing. I am just sorry that we still have guys like Hatch, McCain and Cochran around consuming oxygen in the Senate.
4q
bump
If McConnell goes down who is on deck to take his place? I hate to think about the possibilities. Maybe the GOP would go by seniority and alphabetical order in make McCain majority leader.
ROFL - Are you high or drunk?
Susan Collins.
“The first woman Senate Majority Leader”!!!!!!!
Won’t that be ‘special’...
ugh
And it is you wussies who brought us RINOs are us. I will never ever vote for a RINO ever again. And if you had any brains or backbone you wouldn’t either.
“If McConnell goes down who is on deck to take his place?”
I know both Cornyn and Alexander want the position. And they’ve been grooming Ron Johnson, who’d be sort of a middle pick, a Tea Party elected conservative with establishment leanings and votes.
I’d like to see Mike Lee, who should be in the leadership one way or another after 2015. He’s brilliant.
The 'real' problem is Democrats, period. We're not in a timeframe where we can try to fix it all in one election, if we lose again, it's over.
I am not defending RINOs, they need to go but we won't have enough clout to do anything, including stopping Democrat tyranny, if we don't get a majority.
Maybe you can tell me how, if we let the House go and don't take back the Senate, we are ever going to fix anything. Another two years with Democrats in control and we won't have to worry about who gets 'elected' because it will all be bogus or gone.
Surely you see that.
Imagine what a Cruz presidency might accomplish with Mike Lee as Majority Leader of the Senate!!!
