(Reuters) - In a crisis situation or evacuation for natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires, people with no criminal record would be allowed to carry a firearm without a permit, under a bill approved Friday by the Florida House of Representatives.

"The bells of liberty are surely ringing throughout Florida today," said Representative Heather Dawes Fitzenhagen, a Fort Myers Republican who sponsored the bill lifting permit requirements for concealed weapons in an emergency declared by the governor or local authorities.

"By passing this bill, you will ensure that no Floridian, in lawful possession of a firearm, must leave it behind."

The House voted 80-36 to send the bill (HB 209) to the state Senate, where a companion bill is ready for a floor vote that would put the measure on Governor Rick Scott's desk later this month.

I know Biden would support my walking around with my shotgun.

First you have to shoot it in the air twice, then you're good to go!

All the laws in the world will not stop confiscation. During disasters the cops themselves go looting homes and businesses.

Does this bill include long guns, or just concealable weapons?

I can think of situations (neighborhood patrol to stop looting) where an AR 15 openly carried would be the right item to have...

Democrats are horrible people, who cares what objections they have? If the guy you quoted had his way he would take guns away from all law biding citizens. Great post - weird comment.

It’s nice when state law finally catches up with the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States...

I'm impressed with Florida too.

We (Florida) were also early with 'conceal carry' laws. And sure enough, our crime rates went down. Local papers portrayed it like we were going to be the wild west with shoot outs on every corner... and that just DID NOT happen. Our liberal media was surprised they were proven wrong so quickly.

This will be the same. In an emergency - when a call to 911 and a response are impossible, being able to protect your family and community are important. That right won't be abused.

We need to review the founders theory on gun control. They had a zero tolerance policy, “the right to bear arms shall not be infringed.” Zero infringement, that’s the original policy.

I weathered Hurricane Katrina 120 miles inland at my deceased parents home. Power, phones and cell phones were out for weeks. Fortunately, that rural area of Mississippi is loaded up with well armed and experienced hunters and vets. Very little crime to report. Any would-be thieves knew they would be dead meat if caught looting or stealing.

Contrast that with the rampant crime in New Orleans where only the criminals were armed.

Excellent point Islander... Thanks for sharing. As an aside, did you know Goal Zero has a solar powered charging system for cell phones and tablets that cost less than a hundred dollars? I got one - living in Florid and all... you can charge directly from the sun...

I have seen several versions of these. I found a manufacturing source in China. Even considered importing them for resale. Makes a great addition to a prepper’s kit.
