Social Security, Treasury target taxpayers for their parents’ decades-old debts
Washington Post | 4.10.13 | Marc Fisher

The Washington Post reports that hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who are expecting refunds this month are instead getting letters informing them that because of a debt they never knew about — often a debt incurred by their parents — the government has confiscated their check.

I don’t know if this is legal. Not that it matters anymore.

Looks like we are heading back to slavery.

Reagan acknowledged is liberal past, and adjusted accordingly as he approached his presidency. Don’t distort his legacy.

There is a clause in 0bamacar that allows them to do the same thing if you take a policy that is subsidized and then become successful...

Same with the Medicaid deal too.

you have to pay it all back.

Here is my problem.

My mother is a spend thrift. She burns money like a sailor on shore leave, and has a plan to be broke so the FedGov can take care of her.

There is legally nothing I can do to stop her habits. Why am I on the hook for the bill?

It is a question of age.

Were you recipient of the benefits or did the profligate spending and going on the dole occur after you were adult and not a dependent?

It has been going on since before I was born. My parents had to declare bankruptcy while I was in college (I had to pay for college myself, they were not able to cosign).

They are on SS now, and Medicare (both are past 67 years of age).

I do not expect to inherit anything. I have 30 acres of the old farmstead in trust that will be a huge tax hit for me sometime, but they can't sell that land or take a lean against it without siblings and my approval.

I have tried to limit my Mom's habits over the years, to the point my sisters do not like me that much. Mom has narcissistic personality disorder, and confronting her will cause an escalation up to physical violence.

I have been independent of them since my high school graduation.

Romney Reagan acknowledged his liberal past, and adjusted accordingly as he approached his presidency. Don’t distort his legacy.

You only know that about Reagan in retrospect. I cannot distort the history and I made no reference to his legacy.

How can people possibly defend against this? The paperwork for an executor is incredibly complex, even when not much money or assets are involved. People would have to have truckloads of paperwork they probably couldn't completely decipher to even attempt a defense. Add to that most people don't do their own taxes anymore.

When final settlement is done with a judge, everybody has their say, and that should be it. A lot of the paperwork (if it even existed) is gone after that point.

Our government is out of control.

Don’t give them your money. Toward the end of the year change your withholding to zero out your tax. Why make the G a free loan in the first place? Withholding was Milton Friedman’s sin, luckily he atoned.

Yep - I have modified my withholding to try to come out close to even come tax time. My wife retired last year and we ended up getting some back from both State and Fed this year./ I retire at the end of the year and will alter my withholding to try to owe the Feds about the same that I receive from the State for future returns. The main goal is to write a check, but not so big that I also owe a penalty.

Retrospect? I am 57 years old I have watched politics since the '60's, including Nixon's years, etc. etc. through RWR. Once Reagan became president, his polices outside illegal immigrant amnesty was pretty much always conservative.

RWR consistently moved right as he became politically active.

They removed the statue of limitations on debt older than 10 years in the farm bill.

How can I be responsible for someone else's debt?

they never should've married

Looked into it a few years ago with the guy I was dating. Sometimes seniors marry so they can extend pension benefits to survivors. Sometimes they marry for improved medical benefits. Sometimes to transfer a house or other property to a partner instead of kids who want to grab it.

But it's not a good idea for seniors with established financial identities and any relatives at all, doesn't matter how distant. It opens the other's estate up to all kinds of unsavory people you never used to be related to.

THey can’t. It’s similar to a bill of attainder. It’s expressly forbidden by the USCON.

That’s why I doubt the article is true or has comething else confused.

They are still taking my money every payday, so he didn't atone for sh*t. I hope he's burning in hell.

Nancy and Harry knew it was in there. It did not matter if anyone read the bill or not. Dem House, Dem Senate.

Bush vetoed the bill. Didn’t matter.

Campaigning to promote a republican candidate that advocates illegal immigration is one barf too many.

Taking care of your own is one thing. Putting a gun to someone’s head and robbing them to pay a debt incurred by another person, relative or stranger, is theft.
