Women begin feeling invisible to men ‘when they turn 51′

Women feel invisible to the opposite sex at the age of 51, it emerged yesterday.

A detailed study of 2,000 women revealed a large percentage felt they no longer received the level of attention they once did after hitting 51.

Many even went as far as to admit they felt ‘ignored’.

The women claimed their confidence plummeted after hitting 50 and blamed greying hair, having to to wear glasses or even struggling to find fashionable clothes.

The lifestyle study, commissioned by herbal remedies company, A.Vogel, also found more than two thirds of women over 45 had walked into a room and felt ‘completely unnoticed’ by the opposite sex.

More than half said they felt ‘left on the shelf’ and that they’d been ‘judged negatively’ because of their age.

Health expert Eileen Durward, who provides advice and support to women through the A.Vogel website and helpline, said: ”The results show a worrying decline in confidence and self-worth in women when faced with the prospect of growing older.

”The world can feel very geared toward appreciating younger women, leaving those of a certain age to feel neglected or less worthy.

“These women are not invisible and neither are their concerns.

”They are often the driving engine behind many a family, juggling careers, looking after older relatives and bringing up children.

”All the while dealing with the ageing process and changes brought on by the menopause.

”They need to be supported, not made to feel washed up.”

The study also found just 15 per cent of women over 45 could claim they had high or very high confidence while, sadly, nearly half described themselves as not very confident at all.

The biggest reason for a decline in self-belief was the feeling that their image had deteriorated.

A dejected four in ten said not getting attention from men like they used to was a factor, more than half had felt intimidated by the presence of younger women at a social event.

A concerned six in ten of the 2,000 studied felt modern life is geared toward a focus on younger women while 46 per cent thought that a lot of what older women go through wasn’t seen or spoken about.

The research also examined the effect the menopause has on women’s confidence as they age.

The results showed around one in five who had experienced menopausal symptoms had difficulty in finding answers to the questions they had about the changes they were facing.

In fact, only 13 per cent felt women were well supported in the lead up to the menopause.

The research, which also involved 500 men, showed many have a ‘head in the sand’ approach to the menopause.

Eileen Durward, who is also an expert on menopause, added: ”Women need to know they are not alone and there are things they can do to help themselves.

“Hot flushes are a good example of something that can have a real impact on confidence, especially in social situations or at work.

”Many women don’t realise that simple steps, like breathing slowly or taking a herbal remedy containing sage, can provide relief.”

I turned 51 about 6 months ago. I can say that I still see women.

I just wish some of them would shut up.

1. It’s absolutely true.

2. It’s never going to change.

The task of womanhood is learning to be as beautiful on the inside as God made them on the outside because the outside part will wither and die like any flower but the inner part lives forever if one is in Christ.

An inwardly beautiful woman will still have the attention she wants from a husband, children and grandchildren in her latter years. The ones who become bitter harpies are just never going to see that type of affirmation once the beauty leaves.

OK..it’s just past 3am..couldn’t sleep..so maybe I’m missing something. I’ve read the article twice now, and nowhere did I see the word married. Are we talking here about single women or married ones? I expect their marital state dramatically alters their self-perception.

The similar poll for men would be about money, not age.

“Men begin feeling invisible to women when they make less than $xxK”

They certainly didn’t make my life miserable. After I was divorced dated a guy who ended up marrying someone who was same age as his your adult daughter. Never could figure out what they had in common and now that he is quite a bit older and no longer able to be so active he is regretting his decision. To each his own. Make your bed and you lie in it.

Well, duh! Men are hardwired to be interested in nubile women so that they can find mates who will help them pass on their genes.

As a woman ages, her reproductive abilities wane, so biology removes her from the nubility pool. Unless the whiners have a way to turn back the clock — which, I am sure, these purveyors of herbal supplements claim they can do — these gals need to readjust their attitudes and learn to value those qualities that they have that are not tied to juvenescence.

If the very basis of your self-image and identity revolves around the level of attention you’re getting from strangers of the opposite sex, then getting old will tend to pose a particular challenge. Leave it to feminists, to make it into some sort of societal ill for which men are yet again responsible, instead of plain old vanity and refusing to age gracefully.

Well said!

When do you think the WH initiative will be launched? We will be subjected to public service announcements similar to those of the “Stop Bullying” campaign.

Hmmm...what will they call it? Start Staring? Check Her Out? Gawk at Granny?

(I am sure that some of you guys will think of some racier names for the initiative, but spare me the vulgarities, please.)

Just thank god you actually had The Touch at one time in your life. I never could tell when a woman was flirting with me.
For years I would be in a grocery line, bank teller line or some other line or place. Get involved in what I thought was just a simple conversation to pass the time or be polite; and have my wife (41 years now)tell me when we were out of earshot that the nice lady was hitting on me.
Got the LADY I wanted though, so the rest just didn’t matter.

I am 65, hubby is 73, we still have a love life, he treats me as a queen, I treat him as a king. These young gals can’t cook, sew, clean, or manage a baby, or a sick man. We older gals do it all. BTW I am a Right of Rush Conservative, shoot, CCW, and love to cook. Hubby has a little trouble handling the Right of Rush, he is a conservative too, just not as much as me. Comes from 40 yrs of following LIBERALS ORDERS. NAVY/Jr College Prof.

These gals would not know how to wash fatigues, diapers, clothes in the bath tub or hang them out to dry, then IRON the fatigues. Only thing when to the cleaners were Dress Uniforms.

I did not let myself become a slob after menopause. Nice size 6. Only thing I gave up is make up, you can’t see it behind glasses any way. I maintain his weight too.

Difference is lib women have a cow when you leave a spot on the counter or the lid up, or the cap off the toothpaste tube. I raised boys, males can’t be trained to put the lid down. So just do it yourself and ignore it.

At 46 you are still quite young, especially these days when they say that 60 is the new 40. Maybe your best bet is to go for women in your age group.

lumpy implants maybe?

I told my cry baby, baby sis who was complaining about her 32A cup, told her I’d trade her the 34DD any day, BACK pain city. Watch what you wish for. I weigh 122 lbs, take care of my skin, hair and hubby and I go places, I have special clothes just for his eyes. Mom said to be what you want in the bedroom, be a lady in public. Mom was right.

Good on you! My wife started to color her hair about 10 years ago and made the mistake of asking me how it looked, told her I didn’t like it, looked phony.
She will never catch up to the old silver fox here, but she looks great.
