Though an outspoken socialist for nearly his entire career, Heilbroner famously wrote in a 1989 New Yorker article prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Less than 75 years after it officially began, the contest between capitalism and socialism is over: capitalism has won...Capitalism organizes the material affairs of humankind more satisfactorily than socialism.[3] He further explained in Dissent in 1992 that "capitalism has been as unmistakable a success as socialism has been a failure"[3] and complimented Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, and Ludwig von Mises on their insistence of the free market's superiority. He emphasized that "democratic liberties have not yet appeared, except fleetingly, in any nation that has declared itself to be fundamentally anticapitalist."[3] However, Heilbroner's preferred capitalist model was the highly redistributionist welfare states of Scandinavia; he stated that his model society was "a slightly idealized Sweden."[4]
Heilbroner died on January 4, 2005 in New York, NY at the age of 85
Sorry Prof, you correctly noted that socialist regimes become tyrannies but couldn't let go of the 'Social Democrat' mindset and pointed to Sweden as the land of the golden mean. A socialist welfare state with capitalism. What never goes way is the lust for power, hatred of western culture and the endless search for a surrogate proletariat by importing masses of unassimalateable natives of turd world states.
The Muzzies have dug in there. Every nation they takeover turns to crap.
Model nation?
Multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual societies cannot survive for long.
The most stable form of nation state is one formed by a united polity that shares a common history, common culture, common faith and most often common ancestry. Removing any one of those elements of common ground in the polity ratchets up the level of self-interest and hostility in a nation’s politics; removing all of those commonalities ensures that representative nations will Balkanize and that totalitarian nations will suffer unrest and insurrection until such time as the iron-hand of the dictators loosens sufficiently for the various disparate peoples to successfully rebel and seek out political self-determination.
If a nation’s immigration rate is kept low, and said nation demands assimilation from its immigrants, then the ethnic element of division can be somewhat ameliorated. But weakening all of the pillars of common identity in a nation ensures its destruction within a couple of short generations.
We will see, in our lifetimes, the map of Europe change radically. Unless immediate and radical political reformation is made, utterly reversing decades of malicious damage done to the nations of Europe by socialists and leftists of all stripes, then in a few decades we’re going to see the Balkan War replayed in the streets of Stockholm, Paris, Berlin....
Diversity is weakness, diversity is division, diversity is poison to democracy.
I saw the words Sweden and Model...disappointed ; (
I say let the left wing scum and the Muslims duke it out.
For some reason I can relate to what is happening in Sweden, the US isn’t far behind, thanks to Comrade Barrack Houssain bin Obama.
Swedish Bump!
Sweden's liberal elites like cheap labor for their factories, pitting middle class people against each other, having access to inexpensive (and grateful) domestic help. Liberal elites are the same all over the world...
I learned quite a bit about contemporary Sweden by reading the Wallander books by Henning Mankell.
.
Sweden is a soft totalitarian state, with enforced multiculturalism, and anarcho-tyranny as foundations of the new regime. This is the face of culturalmarxism : state enforced cultural suicide.
I’m not sure the “melting pot” was ever a perfect metaphor for America. More true, certainly at first than it became over time, but even in early immigration periods in the 19th century there was always some clinging to home-country culture. The Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Scandinavians, Croats, yadda yadda yadda... The difference though was they were -determined- to become Americans. They learned English and enforced it with their kids. They were proud to have an American identity. Sure, they all kept some of their homeland cultural traditions and were proud of their heritage, but they were American first. They “melted” into a new alloyed culture and they assimilated the parts that mattered. Not complete melt, but a serviceable alloy.
Multiculturalists want to make us instead into a “tossed salad”. Everything gets mixed up together but all the original bits stay in their original form and remain essentially unchanged by the mixing experience. There is no joining together, no melting, no new alloy... The whole is in fact weaker than the sum of its parts.
A strong structural glue-laminate beam can be made from a large number of small pieces of wood. But they have to be glued together into one thing with one mission, one purpose. A lot of small pieces of wood assembled like a beam, without the glue, will be just a pile of cordwood in the end.
