Harrah's Casino in Tunica closing costs 1,300 jobs (Mississippi)
The Sun-Herald ^ | March 26, 2014 | Mary Perez

Posted on 03/28/2014 5:41:22 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Caesars Entertainment announced in a press release Wednesday that it will close Harrah's Tunica on June 2.

This is one of three casinos Harrah's operates in Tunica in northern Mississippi.

The 1,300 jobs that will be lost makes this one of the biggest layoffs ever in Mississippi, said Richard Bennett, chairman of the House Gaming Committee.

The layoffs come at a time when Tunica County had the highest unemployment in state in February at 17.3 percent.

Bennett said 75 percent of the jobs are held by Mississippi residents, with the remaining 25 percent of the employees from Tennessee and Arkansas.

"After exploring every other viable alternative, we have come to the difficult but necessary conclusion to close Harrah's Tunica in an effort to appropriately position our business for the current market opportunity and ensure the long-term viability of our remaining operations in the vicinity," said John Payne, president of central markets and partnership development.

The company said it plans to collaborate with local officials to find other uses for Harrah's Tunica.

The casino will remain operational until its closure, the company said, and will help its employees in the transition.

Caesars Entertainment also owns Horseshoe Casino Tunica and Tunica Roadhouse Casino & Hotel, and Bennett said the company plans to invest in those properties.

Caesars also is investing about $40 million in the Gulf Coast market, he said, in a remodel and re-branding of Grand Biloxi into Harrah's Gulf Coast.

"They're not leaving the state. They're investing in Mississippi," he said.

The Mohegan tribe and the Mashentucket Pequot operate their casinos. Mohegan owns a casino in Pennsylvania, runs a Mississippi casino and is trying to get pepermission to start a Massachusetts casino for the Nipmuck tribe.

“I say that if they’re going to allow indians to run casinos without regulation then lets have casinos everywhere”

They tried that in Atlantic City, and realized they were fighting over the finite number of gamblers; building more casinos doesn’t creat more gamblers, just attracts some from another casino. Now that there are casinos in eastern Pennsylvania, Atlantic City is getting crushed; not only did Pennsylvania gamblers stop coming, but many in northern NJ would rather drive an hour than two and a half. Years before, the CT casinos had started siphoning off NYC gamblers; the distance was similar, but outside of the summer the environment in CT was much more appealing.

the taxi driver in Vegas was telling us a few weeks ago that the unemployment in Vegas rivals Detroit,

Probably the same taxi driver that said the same thing to me 3 years ago.

Harry Reid got re-elected how, again?

“Most people I talked to were only part time i the past couple a years. Looks like they are getting ready for obamacare.”

Probably; that’s still a lot of work to lose.

I'm sure the 1300 folks losing their jobs would totally appreciate your self-serving comment. Not.

I liked Harrahs and 1300 people might disagree with you.

Now WHAT in the world did I say to make you think that I disliked Harrah's? Just because I saw the plate "Sicily"? MY, you do have an odd way of thinking, ready for the negative.
My husband and I were TICKLED PINK to see that. We LOVED it. We enjoyed Harrah's too.

Try, maybe, to keep your mindset a BIT more positive when it comes to fellow FReepers. We aren't all as ready on the negative as you are.

Well good for them. They are, in reality, chump change compared to Las Vegas. Maybe you haven't been to Vegas lately. They put most of the world to shame. They certainly put the local tribes to shame.

We have a few local Indian tribes here in California who "run" their tribal casinos. It's MOSTLY a joke. No, it's kind of sad to see--SO tacky, run down and hardly worth the effort. They are CERTAINLY no threat WHATSOEVER to Vegas. NO ONE is.
I see them going the way of the dodo eventually.

What is "snarky" about my post and, more to the point, why even BOTHER reply to it if it is offensive to you? Makes no sense.

The three biggest Indian casinos are Foxwoods, in Ledyard, CT, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville CT and the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa, FL.

Every liberal in the country whines about the "poor Indians. That may have been the case EONS ago but it's not true anymore.

I get irritated with the give-aways by our government and by the Indians--who aren't REALLY Indians. REAL Indians are from India.

The American "Indians" aren't indigenous because they all came from the Siberian hunter groups.
And they aren't even the FIRST people on this continent. The Kennewick people were here FIRST "Americans," hunting the mastodons. THEY were Caucasians, so the experts say, because their bones show an OVAL skull, which is European, while Oriental Asians (Siberian hunter groups are included) have ROUND heads. There were NO ROUND HEADS in the ancient world of the first Americans, only the Kennewick people--from around the Columbus River in Washington. [Go ahead and GOOGLE Kennewick Man.)

I get irritated that the American "Indians" don't have the citizenship or enthusiasm to become Americans for real and drop the victim attitude.

What? Kennewick Man is reported as being most closely genetically related to the Ainu, indigenous people of Japan. And no, Indians never called themselves Indians in the first place so that's a weird grievance.
