Now that's Las Vegas. It's different at these other casinos across the country. Those are usually sad and depressing places. Little old ladies throwing their grandchildren's inheritance into slot machines one nickel at a time - or playing bingo.

The Harrah's in New Orleans isn't bad, but those casinos along the Mississippi coast are pretty much as you describe. I quit going to those, after the places filled up with little old ladies in wheelchairs (and often toting oxygen bottles, too). I doubt they had anybody's inheritance to spend - more likely social security $$ going in the slots. Yep, depressing on many levels.

the taxi driver in Vegas was telling us a few weeks ago that the unemployment in Vegas rivals Detroit, that most of the big lavish hotels are half empty even though they'll tell you that their "booked"....all it means is that they laid off lots of staff to keep going....

I go to Tunica about once a month, usually the Gold Strike. Harrah’s was nice and had good rates ($100 for two nights Sat & Sun).

I usually get free nights anytime and get the pit boss to comp me food, so my only cost is what I lose.

If U was to lose $200 over a weekend, it is still cheaper than most any other entertainment. Just going to a movie costs me $75 (for three people) after eating and movie.

Like you mentioned in your entertaining post, many of the usual places can be more hell on earth than entertainment. My wife and her sister play the machines some and I play the tables. Its an hour from my home and I can get away with a mini vacation away from home. Sometimes I make money and sometimes I don’t.

Go to Vegas much? Still lots of old ladies and dudes puffing down a pack a night playing nickel machines.

Most people I talked to were only part time i the past couple a years. Looks like they are getting ready for obamacare.

When they bought out another group a few years ago, they owned five of the NINE casinos at Tunica.

They had to give up Ballys and moved their Harrahs casino and sold the old one which is now Resorts.

There are only three small casinos in Ark. One at Southland Park in West Memphis (greyhound racing) near Tunica. One at Oaklawn in Hot Springs (horse racing)and a “Cherokee” casino way up in the NW in Eureka Springs (Passion Play).

The overall economy is a big part of it, but I do believe you are right about the floods in 2011. I’ve never been to the dog track since they put in casinos (which are not full casinos), but I hear a lot of folks (minority) I work with talk about it.

The newly jobless will be happy having a full-time vacation, because Obama said that if you have Obama are you don’t need a job.
