SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) California lawmakers are beginning to back away from a new law that bans bare-hand contact with food in restaurants and bars, with the Assembly Health Committee voting unanimously Tuesday to repeal and revisit the regulation.
The vote follows opposition from chefs and bartenders who say they were taken off guard by the new regulation.
Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill last year requiring restaurant workers to wear gloves or use utensils when handling ready-to-eat food, including the rice in a sushi roll and the mint in a mojito.

Rollback Nanny State PING!
There should be a law that Taxpayers deserve a couple drops of lube as they ram this sort of stuff up our dirtchute... It’s not like we are asking for a reach around too.
I wish they were as militant about our plastic grocery bags. I want my bags!! A couple of stores have started to punish their customers by charging for a paper bag! Ten cents please, otherwise look like a shoplifter if you want, walking out with merchandise exposed. Very contemptuous. If a store around here (Bay Area. Ca.) began adverstising that ‘we don’t charge our customers extra to put their items in a bag. We want your business!” I would shop there.
California lawmakers reconsider bare-hand handshake for politicians ban to be replaced by kid gloves
Gloves can get just as filthy as hands.
Not everyone there is a criminal yet.
It is for your own protection. When has the government been wrong?
I just have to laugh at all of Cali people that are so stupid that they can’t take care of themselves and think that government is always the answer to every single problem.
The law probably mandates that 10-cent charge. And just watch it go up—like a toll on a bridge. This will be a new cash cow for the politicians.
It's worse because it creates a mindset in the worker that their hands are clean because they never feel their hands getting dirty! I ran food operations for twenty five years and never had a sanitation issue due to dirty hands. You just need to instill the mindset of clean hands and people are happy to comply, those that didn't went to work for the competition.
Oh good, then nobody has to wash their hands anymore...
Thanks for the ping!
A few years back I ate at a cafeteria where the food handler wore gloves while filling my order.
I paid her, she took my money, with gloves on, gave me change and went on to serve the next customer, same gloves on.
I watched her do this over and over. I think she was protecting her hands from the nasty food and dirty money.
Screw ‘em. I’m a proud California criminal many times over.
So are most of my friends. Come and get us Jerrybrownshirts!
