Gov. Snyder: Michigan won't recognize same-sex marriages

Gov. Rick Snyder says Michigan won't recognize more than 300 same-sex marriages performed last weekend.

The marriages were performed Saturday before a federal appeals court suspended a decision that overturned the state's ban on gay marriage.

Snyder's announcement Wednesday closes the door to certain benefits granted to Michigan married couples. The move comes after a day after an appeals court indefinitely stopped any additional same-sex marriages.

With Snyder its a pure fiscal issue. I don't doubt that he personally supports gay marriage as long as it doesn't cost him anything. However we're a fairly weak governor state and it doesn't really matter what he thinks.

If anyone asks Snyder about this, he should reply that he is just using “The Obama Precedent” on Executive Powers.

He does have a pen, and a phone, after all.

Actually I’d rather that Snyder issue a statement suggesting that Obama recognize his legal/constitutional limitations like he (Snyder) has done.

Did he finally cast a moisten finger into the wind to figure out what HE stands for?

Don’t think so. Our attorney general was adamant about upholding the will of the voters. Maybe Gov. Snyder decided to do the same.

I wish he found his Spine a few months ago and would have went for the Free-Market Alternative to Medicare Expansion, aka the Colbeck Bill rather than today....

As it should be. On corrupt judge doesn’t get to rewrite reality.

I was suspicious from day one about Snyder, seeing him come out of nowhere and seeing the yards with his campaign signs, but I’ll take him over all but one of the govs we’ve had in my lifetime. Thanks JimRob.

True, Snyder's turned out to be pretty good considering he was a GOP establishment picked candidate who didn't say much about conservative issues before the election.

Of course, if Snyder had caved on this one, there would have been some people on here to defend him and claim he can't help it because it's a "blue state" (gotta use the MSM designated colors of course) and he's the "best we can get" blah blah blah.

As another MI Freeper calls him. Rick (I’ll take it from here) Snyder. LOL

Fortunately Michigan is a weak governor state which is why Jennifer Grandmole was the one to sign our concealed carry law despite her own opposition to it.

Michigan's Attorney General? Last night on the radio, Toledo, Ohio station, he said that he would uphold Michigan's constitution, which meant the way we voted AGAINST gay marriage. I'm confused.

Schuette filed his emergency appeal on Friday only minutes after Friedman struck down a state constitutional amendment approved by 59 percent of voters in 2004, ruling the same-sex marriage ban violated the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection under the law.

"Michigan voters enshrined that decision in our state constitution, and their will should stand and be respected," Schuette said upon filing. "I will continue to carry out my duty to protect and defend the constitution."
