It's no secret that smoking causes lung cancer. But what about diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction? Fifty years into the war on smoking, scientists still are adding diseases to the long list of cigarettes' harms - even as the government struggles to get more people to kick the habit.

A new report from the U.S. Surgeon General's office says the nation is at a crossroads, celebrating decades of progress against the chief preventable killer but not yet poised to finish the job.

First, think of all the tax money they'll lose.

Second, isn't pot smoked? And it's now legal in some places. Yeah, they care about "health".

Third, government is having a cow because some people still exercise freedom. Bad! Nasty! /s

Just say anybody who smokes (or owns guns or is a homophobe or is against contraception/abortion or any other PC thing) has to pay for Obamacare but can't claim any benefits.

It's what they want anyway.

So if it’s so awful then ban it outright...but you won’t because the government relies on the taxes to fund all their liberal social programs...

Government is more dangerous than smoking could ever be.

A more duplicitous, nefarious group of government bureaucrats under this President has never existed.

Words, they use them indiscriminately, even to their own apparatus’ detriment. They want to eradicate smoking because that’s a touch point for their rabid NAZI control freaks. They ignore the tax implications, the tobacco settlements and all that - money, mucho mucho money in taxes.

They won’t even think about it until they start to wonder why tax revenues are down. Mental midgets in charge of the playground.

Their recovery from this stupidity (much like the ad hoc retrenchments in ObamaCare’s daily dispensations) will be to tax the ever lovin’ sh!t out of smoking cessation products.

Great job guys. Keep it up. Just keep it up - until we come for you.

The jewel of the report: "The tobacco industry continues to introduce and market new products that establish and maintain nicotine addiction," Friday's report says. The percentage of middle and high school students who use electronic or e-cigarettes more than doubled between 2011 and 2012.

And now the new evil, which has no second hand effects, no reputable study that indicates any elevated dangers, and painted as if the Joe Camel himself were handing them out to high schoolers.

Yet congresscritters excoriate E-Cigs, no tar, no carbon monoxide, no ash, no soot, no formaldehyde or other tobacco additives.

Even the e-cigs, which have electronics that produce a VAPOR, are going to be taxed as potential revenue source!

“Nearly half a million people will die from smoking-related diseases this year. “

And nearly 2.5 million will die from non-smoking related diseases.

What is their point?

I didn’t do the research, but I think more people die from abortion than cigarette caused sickness. I know more people die from heart disease than cancer, but heart disease is exacerbated by smoking.

With the government holding the purse strings to medical care, they will find a way, you can bet your entire gun collection on it, to outlaw whatever they please. Be it too much carbohydrates, or sugars, or refined flour, tobacco, alcohol, transfats, saturated fat, gluten, dairy...all for the better good. Or to punish an industry, or reward another.
