some things should bring shame and opprobrium
. I am sorry that this drunken fool is incapable of understanding her part in her problems. Had she been sober and locked out and unable to get in then I would be much more sympathetic. She chose the behavior now she doesn’t want the consequences

Good reason for not lowering the age for alcohol.

I only read Cosmo in the checkout line to catch up on the 25 "secret" ways some twenty-something hipsterette in Sally Jesse Raphael glasses (without lenses)
thinks I can be driven wild in bed with. Seriously, it seems they come up with 25 "different" ways
every month and blab so on the cover to sell magazines to 17-25 year old girls.
I believe the only difference between each issue is that they put a different anorexia nervosa patient on the cover each month.

It’s the wages of sin, come to haunt a new generation ignorant of the diabolical one. It’s terrible what happened to this young lady and what crummy friends.

Alyssa does not deserve condemnation and wrath — but her irresponsible friends do.
Prayers for Alyssa’s recovery.

One of the first lessons my (sainted) dad taught me is to NEVER drive off, leaving a passenger at the curb. Wait until they get inside. When they are teen agers, it is also good to train them to flick the porch light as a thank you to their ride once they’ve made it in the door. And we didn’t even live in a cold climate.

Hm, I did a bunch of underage drinking on the sly way back when.
Sometimes things snowball and bad things happen. That’s life.
But bottom line, the friends should have stayed until the door opened. Just common courtesy, drunk or sober it’s what friends & family should do at night.

Well, the friends aren't "victims," so I'm not sure shaming them is so wrong.
Maybe being reminded of their responsibility, or lack thereof, in their "friend's" misfortune will resuscitate their malformed consciences.

I remember crashing my bike horribly at age 8 and my friends took care of me and made sure I received proper medical attention.
What’s changed?

She's young and did something stupid, and her friends let her down by not looking out for her. She's already paying a high price, physically. Stop rubbing her nose in it and humiliating her, she's looking at potential quadriplegia.

"...Lommel in only a sweater, jeans and Ugg boots."
She's lucky to be alive. Alcohol appears to have been only part of the problem. Many times I've seen the "endless summer" kids on their way to university classes in mid-winter wearing cargo shorts, beach sandals, and a sweatshirt. Fine, if not delayed getting from point A to point B. Otherwise, it could be tragic. My first encounter with frostbite was on the campus of the University of Nebraska, during a fifteen minute walk from classes to dorm in -70 degree windchill. Later that week, two of my classmates froze to death in their stranded vehicle on the interstate highway. They were wearing only varsity jackets, T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. It really doesn't take much to get yourself killed. Lessons in preparedness I've never forgotten.

In olden times complete strangers would consider it their duty to make sure an unescorted lady got home safe.
Back when we were less civilized. Lord, help her.
